  1  4      OSTERHAUS, PETERSEN, MASCHER, STEVENS, MERTZ, 
  1  5 REYNOLDS, FREVERT, DE BOEF, GRUNDBERG, JOCHUM, GARMAN, 
  1  6              BOGGESS, GREIMANN, and HUSER
  1  7          (COMPANION TO LSB 3577SS BY JOHNSON)
  1  8 A Concurrent Resolution encouraging state and local
  1  9    governments, business interests, health care
  1 10    professionals, and individuals with an interest in
  1 11    good health to help educate the public regarding
  1 12    osteoporosis prevention, detection, and treatment,
  1 13    and designating April 12, 2001, as Osteoporosis
  1 14    Awareness Day.
  1 15    WHEREAS, osteoporosis is a condition of reduced
  1 16 bone mass that primarily affects women, resulting in
  1 17 crippling bone fractures; and
  1 18    WHEREAS, osteoporosis is a progressive disease that
  1 19 generally is revealed with bone fractures occurring in
  1 20 the hips, spine, and wrists; and
  1 21    WHEREAS, the prevalence of osteoporosis in Iowa
  1 22 continues to grow, with an estimated one out of every
  1 23 three women and one out of every eight men in Iowa
  1 24 affected, and by 2015, the Iowa Department of Public
  1 25 Health estimates the annual cost to Iowans for
  1 26 treatment, and long-term care, and other needs could
  1 27 reach $229 million; and
  1 28    WHEREAS, osteoporosis can be prevented or slowed
  1 29 with education, regular exercise beginning in
  1 30 childhood, and proper nutrition, especially
  2  1 consumption of calcium; and
  2  2    WHEREAS, low-bone density and osteoporosis can be
  2  3 detected through bone density testing and treated with
  2  4 certain medications; and
  2  5    WHEREAS, bone density testing is noninvasive, and
  2  6 can be conducted simply and painlessly; and
  2  7    WHEREAS, the Iowa Osteoporosis Coalition, Inc., the
  2  8 Iowa Pharmacy Association, and Hy-Vee Food Stores are
  2  9 recognized as contributors to making bone density
  2 10 testing more available, in part by providing bone
  2 11 density testing at the Capitol in conjunction with
  2 12 Osteoporosis Awareness Day on April 12, 2001; and
  2 13    WHEREAS, educational efforts to raise awareness
  2 14 regarding osteoporosis should be targeted both to
  2 15 youth, who are increasingly substituting consumption
  2 16 of soft drinks in place of milk, and to adults; NOW
  2 17 THEREFORE,
  2 18    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, THE
  2 19 SENATE CONCURRING, That the Iowa General Assembly
  2 20 designates April 12, 2001, as Osteoporosis Awareness
  2 21 Day.
  2 22    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That Iowa health care
  2 23 professionals, county health departments, public and
  2 24 private schools, hospitals, area agencies on aging,
  2 25 employer-operated wellness programs, health care
  2 26 insurers, health care benefit management
  2 27 organizations, women's groups, nonprofit
  2 28 organizations, professional associations, religious
  2 29 and other community-based organizations, and others
  2 30 who can provide educational information to youth and
  3  1 adults are encouraged to provide general educational
  3  2 information to the public concerning osteoporosis, as
  3  3 well as the methods for preventing osteoporosis, the
  3  4 importance of bone density testing and other means of
  3  5 detecting low-bone density osteoporosis, and
  3  6 approaches for treating osteoporosis.
  3  7    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Iowa Osteoporosis
  3  8 Coalition, Inc., the Iowa Pharmacy Association, and
  3  9 Hy-Vee Food Stores are thanked for providing bone
  3 10 density testing at the Capitol in conjunction with
  3 11 Osteoporosis Awareness Day.
  3 12    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That upon passage of this
  3 13 Resolution, an official copy shall be sent by the
  3 14 Chief Clerk of the House of Representatives to the
  3 15 Iowa Department of Public Health for dissemination as
  3 16 part of its efforts to educate the public concerning
  3 17 osteoporosis.
