1 3 A Senate Resolution honoring Major General Warren G.
1 4 Lawson, recommending Major General Warren G. Lawson
1 5 for the Iowa Medal of Valor, and designating a Major
1 6 General Warren G. Lawson Day.
1 7 WHEREAS, Major General Warren G. Lawson entered the
1 8 United States Army as an infantry second lieutenant
1 9 upon completion of the University of Iowa Reserve
1 10 Training Corps Program and after an outstanding career
1 11 on the University of Iowa football team; and
1 12 WHEREAS, Major General Lawson retired from active
1 13 service in the United States Army in 1979 to return to
1 14 his home and to become the Iowa National Guard Deputy
1 15 Adjutant General, and to subsequently be appointed as
1 16 the Iowa National Guard Adjutant General in 1985; and
1 17 WHEREAS, Major General Lawson has provided
1 18 exceptional leadership for members of the Iowa Army
1 19 National Guard and the Iowa Air National Guard through
1 20 the Iowa National Guard's years of greatest
1 21 operational readiness and activity in its history,
1 22 with Major General Lawson's leadership being
1 23 recognized by his tenure as President of the Adjutant
1 24 General's Association from 1995 to 1997; and
1 25 WHEREAS, under Major General Lawson's leadership,
1 26 the operational readiness of the Iowa National Guard
1 27 units across the state achieved record heights, and
1 28 members of the Iowa Army National Guard and Iowa Air
1 29 National Guard were deployed to serve in the Persian
1 30 Gulf War and the Bosnian peacekeeping mission, and to
2 1 enforce the North Atlantic Treaty Organization "no-
2 2 fly" zones over Northern and Southern Iraq, each time
2 3 bringing great pride and credit to Iowa and the United
2 4 States; and
2 5 WHEREAS, Major General Lawson directed countless
2 6 state active duty operations, including the deployment
2 7 of 4,600 Iowa National Guardsmen during the record-
2 8 setting floods of 1993, thereby reducing the negative
2 9 effects of the many emergencies and disasters on the
2 10 citizens of Iowa; and
2 11 WHEREAS, Major General Lawson has been a driving
2 12 force in the establishment of a nationwide distance
2 13 learning network, as well as the establishment of the
2 14 United States Army's National Maintenance Training
2 15 Center and the youth-oriented STARBASE Program at Camp
2 16 Dodge; NOW THEREFORE,
2 17 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the General
2 18 Assembly recommends to the Governor that the Iowa
2 19 Medal of Valor be presented to Major General Warren G.
2 20 Lawson; and
2 21 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the General Assembly
2 22 designates June 14, 1999, as Major General Warren G.
2 23 Lawson Day in honor and recognition of Major General
2 24 Lawson's dedicated and selfless service to Iowa and
2 25 the United States.
