PAG LIN 1 1 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. ___ 1 2 BY FINK 1 3 A Senate Resolution to honor posthumously United 1 4 States Presidents Thomas Jefferson and 1 5 Herbert C. Hoover, by hanging their 1 6 portraits in the Senate chamber. 1 7 WHEREAS, the end of a millennium is fast 1 8 approaching and former Presidents Jefferson and Hoover 1 9 have made innumerable contributions to the United 1 10 States of America as well as the State of Iowa; and 1 11 WHEREAS, Thomas Jefferson, third President of the 1 12 United States, and one of the most brilliant men in 1 13 American history, has left a long-standing legacy not 1 14 only in this country, but across the world; and 1 15 WHEREAS, Thomas Jefferson, a strong advocate of 1 16 democracy and the rights of the individual, was 1 17 instrumental in the colonial fight for freedom, was 1 18 the author of the Declaration of Independence, one of 1 19 the greatest documents ever written, and was 1 20 influential in inspiring the Bill of Rights; and 1 21 WHEREAS, Thomas Jefferson was responsible for one 1 22 of the largest territorial acquisitions in American 1 23 history, the Louisiana Purchase, which included what 1 24 is now the State of Iowa; and 1 25 WHEREAS, Thomas Jefferson dedicated his life to 1 26 public service, not only as President, but as 1 27 Secretary of State under George Washington and Vice 1 28 President under John Adams, as well as numerous state 1 29 government positions he held in the State of Virginia; 1 30 and 2 1 WHEREAS, Herbert C. Hoover, thirty-first President 2 2 of the United States, son of Jesse Clark Hoover and 2 3 Huldah Minthorn Hoover, of West Branch, Iowa, is the 2 4 only person from this state to have held that office; 2 5 and 2 6 WHEREAS, Herbert Hoover, known as the "Great 2 7 Humanitarian," donated most of his life to the service 2 8 of others, organizing and presiding over numerous 2 9 organizations such as the Belgian Relief Committee, 2 10 the Boys Clubs of America, the Famine Emergency 2 11 Commission, the American Child Health Association, and 2 12 the Hoover Commissions; and 2 13 WHEREAS, Herbert Hoover and his administration 2 14 either proposed or approved many pieces of legislation 2 15 that had a direct impact on this state, including the 2 16 establishment of the Federal Farm Board, the 2 17 Agricultural Marketing Act of 1929, the Child's Bill 2 18 of Rights, as well as a proposal for creating a 2 19 federal department of education; and 2 20 WHEREAS, the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library- 2 21 Museum in West Branch, Iowa, is home to thousands of 2 22 historical documents, and has served more than 2.5 2 23 million visitors from around the world, as well as 2 24 sponsoring the research of more than 2,000 scholars, 2 25 NOW THEREFORE, 2 26 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That Presidents 2 27 Thomas Jefferson and Herbert C. Hoover be posthumously 2 28 recognized by the Iowa Senate for their 2 29 accomplishments as exceptional leaders and 2 30 representatives of democracy as the end of the 3 1 twentieth century approaches; and 3 2 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That as a millennium comes 3 3 to an end, the Iowa Senate honor the accomplishments 3 4 of former Presidents Thomas Jefferson and Herbert C. 3 5 Hoover by hanging their respective portraits on the 3 6 marble columns of the Senate chamber's north wall or 3 7 another appropriate place. 3 8 LSB 3040SS 78 3 9 jp/sc/14
