PAG LIN 1 1 Section 1. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION. There is appropriated 1 2 from the general fund of the state to the department of 1 3 education for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2000, and 1 4 ending June 30, 2001, the following amount, or so much thereof 1 5 as is necessary, to be used for the purpose designated: 1 6 To support innovative research-based K-12 education 1 7 projects: 1 8 .................................................. $ 375,000 1 9 Moneys appropriated in this section shall be used to award 1 10 education innovation project grants in cooperation with the 1 11 council for continuous improvement. Eligible projects shall 1 12 demonstrate research-based innovative methods to improve the 1 13 quality of teaching or promote attraction and retention of 1 14 teachers in the teaching profession, identify measurable 1 15 performance indicators and annually report results, and 1 16 demonstrate how the project can be self-supporting within a 1 17 three-year to five-year period. Notwithstanding section 8.33, 1 18 unencumbered or unobligated funds remaining on June 30 of the 1 19 fiscal year for which the funds were appropriated shall not 1 20 revert but shall be available for expenditure for the 1 21 following fiscal year for the purposes of this section. 1 22 The department shall submit a report on the status of the 1 23 projects receiving grants under this section to the senate and 1 24 house standing committees on education and the joint 1 25 appropriations subcommittee on education by December 1, 2000. 1 26 EXPLANATION 1 27 This bill appropriates moneys from the general fund of the 1 28 state to the department of education for education innovation 1 29 project grants for fiscal year 2000-2001. 1 30 Moneys appropriated shall be used to award education 1 31 innovation project grants in cooperation with the council for 1 32 continuous improvement. Projects must demonstrate research- 1 33 based innovative methods to improve the quality of teaching or 1 34 promote attraction and retention of teachers in the teaching 1 35 profession, identify measurable performance indicators, and 2 1 annually report results, and demonstrate how the project can 2 2 be self-supporting. 2 3 The department is instructed to submit a report on the 2 4 status of the grant projects to the general assembly's 2 5 education committees by December 1, 2000. 2 6 LSB 5444XS 78 2 7 kh/cf/24
