  1  1    Section 1.  Section 400.17, unnumbered paragraph 3, Code
  1  2 1999, is amended to read as follows:
  1  3    Employees shall not be required to be a resident of the
  1  4 city in which they are employed, but they shall become a
  1  5 resident of the state at the time such appointment or
  1  6 employment begins and shall remain a resident of the state
  1  7 during employment.  Cities may set reasonable maximum
  1  8 distances outside of the corporate limits of the city that
  1  9 police officers, fire fighters, and other critical municipal
  1 10 employees may live.  
  1 11                           EXPLANATION
  1 12    This bill strikes a requirement that city civil service
  1 13 employees must reside within this state during their civil
  1 14 service employment.
