  1  3            (COMPANION TO HCR 111 BY THOMSON)
  1  4 A Senate Concurrent Resolution encouraging state and
  1  5    local governments, business interests, health care
  1  6    professionals, and individuals with interest in
  1  7    good health to help in educating the public to raise
  1  8    awareness regarding osteoporosis prevention,
  1  9    detection, and treatment.
  1 10    WHEREAS, osteoporosis is a condition of reduced
  1 11 bone mass that primarily affects women, resulting in
  1 12 crippling bone fractures; and
  1 13    WHEREAS, osteoporosis is a progressive disease that
  1 14 generally is revealed with bone fractures occurring in
  1 15 the hip, spine, and wrist; and
  1 16    WHEREAS, the prevalence of osteoporosis in Iowa
  1 17 continues to grow, and by 2015, the Iowa department of
  1 18 public health estimates the annual cost to Iowans for
  1 19 treatment, and long-term care, and other needs could
  1 20 reach $229 million; and
  1 21    WHEREAS, osteoporosis can be prevented or slowed
  1 22 with proper nutrition, especially consumption of
  1 23 calcium, regular exercise beginning in childhood, and
  1 24 education; and
  1 25    WHEREAS, low-bone density and osteoporosis can be
  1 26 detected through bone density testing and treated with
  1 27 certain medications; and
  1 28    WHEREAS, educational efforts to raise awareness
  1 29 regarding osteoporosis should be targeted both to
  1 30 youth, who are increasingly substituting consumption
  2  1 of soft drinks in place of milk, and to adults; NOW
  2  2 THEREFORE,
  2  3    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, THE HOUSE OF
  2  4 REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING, That Iowa health care
  2  5 professionals, county public health departments,
  2  6 public and private schools, hospitals, area agencies
  2  7 on aging, employer-operated wellness programs, health
  2  8 care insurers and care management corporations,
  2  9 women's groups, nonprofit organizations, professional
  2 10 associations, religious organizations and other
  2 11 community-based organizations, and others who can
  2 12 provide educational information to youth and adults,
  2 13 are encouraged to provide general educational
  2 14 information concerning osteoporosis, as well as the
  2 15 methods for preventing osteoporosis, importance of
  2 16 bone-density testing and other means of detecting low-
  2 17 bone density osteoporosis, and approaches for treating
  2 18 osteoporosis; and
  2 19    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That upon passage of this
  2 20 Resolution, an official copy shall be sent by the
  2 21 Secretary of the Senate to the Iowa department of
  2 22 public health for the department to disseminate as
  2 23 part of its efforts to educate the public concerning
  2 24 osteoporosis.
