  1  3                 (SUCCESSOR TO SSB 1157)
  1  4 A Concurrent Resolution recognizing and endorsing Read
  1  5    Across America Day, and calling for the citizens of
  1  6    the State of Iowa to reaffirm the importance and the
  1  7    joy of reading.
  1  8    WHEREAS, the citizens of the State of Iowa are
  1  9 firmly committed to promoting reading as a catalyst
  1 10 for the academic success of Iowa students; and
  1 11    WHEREAS, the academic success of Iowa students will
  1 12 prepare them to effectively compete for and excel at
  1 13 employment opportunities in the global economy of the
  1 14 future; and
  1 15    WHEREAS, the State of Iowa has traditionally
  1 16 provided significant leadership in the area of
  1 17 education, grounded in the principle that education is
  1 18 vital to the state's well-being and long-term quality
  1 19 of life; and
  1 20    WHEREAS, Tuesday, March 2, 1999, is the birthday of
  1 21 the noted children's author, Theodore Geisel, also
  1 22 known as Dr. Seuss, and has been designated Read
  1 23 Across America Day in celebration of his birthday and
  1 24 in promotion of reading and adult involvement in
  1 25 children's education; NOW THEREFORE,
  1 26    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, THE HOUSE OF
  1 27 REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING, That the General Assembly
  1 28 of the State of Iowa recognizes and endorses Tuesday,
  1 29 March 2, 1999, as Read Across America Day; and calls
  1 30 upon the citizens of the state to reaffirm to Iowa
  2  1 students the importance and the joy of reading and to
  2  2 recommit our state resources to promote and provide
  2  3 programs and activities to make Iowa students the best
  2  4 readers in the world; and
  2  5    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this
  2  6 Resolution be sent to the state Department of
  2  7 Education for distribution throughout the state's
  2  8 primary and secondary level education system, and for
  2  9 coordination of media promotion of Read Across America
  2 10 Day.
