1 2 BY SHOULTZ, JENKINS, DOTZLER, DODERER, CHAPMAN,
1 3 FORD, SCHRADER, SIEGRIST, MASCHER, WITT, and RAECKER
1 4 A House Resolution honoring Nina Smith for being
1 5 named girls' high school basketball National
1 6 Player of the Year.
1 7 WHEREAS, the citizens of Iowa are thrilled that
1 8 Nina Smith of Waterloo West High School was named
1 9 Parade Magazine's National Player of the Year, the
1 10 Women's Basketball Coaches Association Player of the
1 11 Year, and National Player of the Year by USA Today in
1 12 high school girls' basketball; and
1 13 WHEREAS, the citizens of Iowa are greatly pleased
1 14 that Nina Smith is the first player from Iowa to earn
1 15 the National Player of the Year honor; and
1 16 WHEREAS, Nina Smith was the only underclassman
1 17 named Parade Magazine's First-Team All-American in
1 18 1998; and
1 19 WHEREAS, Nina Smith during the 1998-1999 season
1 20 made almost 80 percent of her field goals within the
1 21 three-point arc, and averaged 26 points, 11.5
1 22 rebounds, and four blocked shots per game; and
1 23 WHEREAS, Nina Smith during the 1998-1999 season led
1 24 the Waterloo West Girls' Basketball Team to a 23-4
1 25 record and to a second-place finish in the Class 4A
1 26 Girls' Basketball Tournament and was named Miss Iowa
1 27 Basketball, the first African-American to receive such
1 28 an honor; and
1 29 WHEREAS, Nina Smith's exciting athletic
1 30 performances and her integrity on and off the
2 1 basketball court have greatly inspired the citizens of
2 2 Iowa; NOW THEREFORE,
2 3 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES,
2 4 That Nina Smith be congratulated on her outstanding
2 5 accomplishments and be thanked for the honor and
2 6 excitement she has brought to the State of Iowa.
