  1  1    Section 1.  NEW SECTION.  135.122  STATEWIDE ORGAN DONOR
  1  2 REGISTRY.
  1  3    The director shall contract for the establishment of a
  1  4 statewide organ donor registry.  The contract shall provide
  1  5 for a centralized database and automated system to make organ
  1  6 donor information available to family members and physicians
  1  7 seven days a week, twenty-four hours per day.  The registry
  1  8 shall be used to compile the organ donation information
  1  9 received by the state department of transportation, county
  1 10 treasurers, attorneys, organ donation awareness programs, and
  1 11 others.
  1 12    Sec. 2.  ORGAN DONATION REGISTRY.  There is appropriated
  1 13 from the general fund of the state to the Iowa department of
  1 14 public health for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2000, and
  1 15 ending June 30, 2001, the following amount, or so much thereof
  1 16 as is necessary, to be used for the purpose designated:
  1 17    For establishing a statewide organ donor registry in
  1 18 accordance with section 135.122, as enacted by this Act, and
  1 19 this section:  
  1 20 .................................................. $     75,000
  1 21    The director of public health shall work with the state
  1 22 department of transportation, county treasurers, and the Iowa
  1 23 organ donor network in developing specifications for the
  1 24 registry.  Consideration shall be given to implementing an
  1 25 automated toll-free hotline.  
  1 26                           EXPLANATION
  1 27    This bill establishes a statewide organ donor registry in
  1 28 the Iowa department of public health and makes an
  1 29 appropriation of $75,000 for implementation.
  1 30    New Code section 135.122 requires the director of public
  1 31 health to contract for the registry.  The contract is to
  1 32 provide for a centralized database and automated system to
  1 33 make organ donor information available to family members and
  1 34 physicians seven days a week, 24 hours per day.  The registry
  1 35 is to be used to compile the organ donation information
  2  1 received by the state department of transportation, county
  2  2 treasurers, attorneys, organ donation awareness programs, and
  2  3 others.
  2  4    The appropriation provides for the director of public
  2  5 health to work with the state department of transportation,
  2  6 county treasurers, and the Iowa organ donor network in
  2  7 developing specifications for the registry.  Consideration is
  2  8 to be given to implementing an automated toll-free hotline.
