PAG LIN 1 1 1 2 HOUSE FILE 689 1 3 1 4 AN ACT 1 5 RELATED TO A PROPOSAL BY THE DEPARTMENT OF CULTURAL AFFAIRS 1 6 CONCERNING THE ESTABLISHMENT OF AN IOWA FREEDOM TRAIL 1 7 PROGRAM. 1 8 1 9 BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF IOWA: 1 10 1 11 Section 1. IOWA FREEDOM TRAIL STUDY. The department of 1 12 cultural affairs shall prepare a proposal with cost estimates 1 13 to explore the establishment of an Iowa freedom trail program 1 14 designed to preserve and commemorate the underground railroad 1 15 and educate the public on issues related to the underground 1 16 railroad and antislavery campaign in Iowa. The department 1 17 shall explore the possibility of securing the cooperation and 1 18 assistance of the national park service in developing and 1 19 implementing the program. The program would assist in 1 20 locating, identifying, and preserving sites, routes, and other 1 21 resources located in the state which served a function in the 1 22 underground railroad and antislavery campaign in the state. 1 23 The program would identify and recognize any citizens of the 1 24 state who were instrumental in the underground railroad and 1 25 antislavery campaign. The department shall submit a report on 1 26 the proposal, and make recommendations, to the general 1 27 assembly by January 1, 2000. 1 28 1 29 1 30 1 31 RON J.
