1 4 PROVIDING FOR THE DESIGNATION OF A STATE POET LAUREATE.

1 6 BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF IOWA:

1 8 Section 1. NEW SECTION. 303.88A STATE POET LAUREATE
1 9 DESIGNATED – NOMINATING COMMITTEE.
1 10 1. A state poet laureate nominating committee is created.
1 11 At the request of the governor, the executive director of
1 12 humanities Iowa and the executive director of the Iowa arts
1 13 council shall each appoint three persons who reside in this
1 14 state to a poet laureate nominating committee. At its initial
1 15 meeting held at the call of the executive directors of
1 16 humanities Iowa and the Iowa arts council, the state poet
1 17 laureate nominating committee shall elect a chairperson and
1 18 vice chairperson from among its members and adopt rules of
1 19 procedure. The members of the state poet laureate nominating
1 20 committee shall be invited to serve without compensation for
1 21 their services. The nominating committee is charged with
1 22 considering the diversity of the people and poetry of Iowa.
1 23 2. If more than one meeting is required, the state poet
1 24 laureate nominating committee shall meet at the call of the
1 25 chairperson or as determined by the nominating committee and
1 26 select a list of three nominees, along with biographical and
1 27 professional information and supporting representative
1 28 material, who are residents of Iowa and who, based on their
1 29 poetic accomplishments, deserve recognition as the state poet
1 30 laureate. The list of nominees shall be transmitted to the
1 31 governor. The governor may select the state poet laureate
1 32 from the list of nominees for a two-year term of office. The
1 33 state poet laureate is an honorary state office and the
1 34 incumbent is entitled to no compensation as a result of the
1 35 appointment.
