  1  1           HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. ___
  1  2                       BY  HANSEN
  1  3 A House Concurrent Resolution requesting that the
  1  4    Governor annually designate the week in June
  1  5    beginning with Father's Day, as prostate cancer
  1  6    awareness week.
  1  7    WHEREAS, the National Cancer Institute reports that
  1  8 after skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common
  1  9 form of malignant cancer among the nation's males, and
  1 10 is the second leading cause of death among males; and
  1 11    WHEREAS, every three minutes a new prostate cancer
  1 12 case is diagnosed making prostate cancer the most
  1 13 diagnosed form of cancer in the nation, with 180,000
  1 14 new diagnoses and 37,000 deaths annually; and
  1 15    WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society recommends
  1 16 that every male age 40 and over should consult with a
  1 17 physician about having regular testing for prostate
  1 18 cancer as part of a regular annual examination, and
  1 19 every male age 50 and over should consult with a
  1 20 physician about having more specific annual tests as
  1 21 the aging process continues; and
  1 22    WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society reports that
  1 23 survival rates for all forms of prostate cancer have
  1 24 steadily improved, increasing from 50 percent to 80
  1 25 percent in the past 30 years; and
  1 26    WHEREAS, it is in the public interest to promote
  1 27 public awareness of the benefits and values of early
  1 28 detection, prevention, and treatment of prostate
  1 29 cancer; and
  1 30    WHEREAS, improved public awareness of the disparity
  2  1 in funding for prostate cancer research, as compared
  2  2 to the research funding for other major fatal
  2  3 diseases, can help bring a halt to this inequity and
  2  4 assist in saving men's lives; and
  2  5    WHEREAS, it is appropriate for the State of Iowa to
  2  6 join men, their families, and loved ones throughout
  2  7 the state in recognizing the importance of this
  2  8 disease; NOW THEREFORE,
  2  9    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, THE
  2 10 SENATE CONCURRING, That the Governor is requested to
  2 11 annually proclaim the week in June beginning with
  2 12 Father's Day, as prostate cancer awareness week to
  2 13 promote early detection, prevention, and treatment of
  2 14 prostate cancer and to encourage males to have an
  2 15 annual examination; and
  2 16    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That upon passage of this
  2 17 resolution an official copy shall be transmitted to
  2 18 the Governor.
