1 3 (COMPANION TO LSB 4415HH BY THOMAS)
1 4 A Concurrent Resolution recognizing and honoring
1 5 members of the Save the Backbone Lake Committee who
1 6 participated in the restoration of Backbone Lake in
1 7 Backbone State Park.
1 8 WHEREAS, Backbone State Park, encompassing 1,780
1 9 acres of forested bluffs, slopes, and uplands along
1 10 the Maquoketa River and Fenchel Creek, is Iowa's
1 11 oldest state park, dedicated on May 28, l920; and
1 12 WHEREAS, a general plan for the development of
1 13 Backbone State Park was completed in 1925 by John
1 14 Fitzsimmons, extension service landscape architect,
1 15 Iowa State College; and
1 16 WHEREAS, with the Fitzsimmons "master plan", the
1 17 completion of the state 25-Year Conservation Plan and
1 18 the creation of the Civilian Conservation Corps in
1 19 1933 combined to provide for the completion of many
1 20 projects at Backbone State Park, including a dam on
1 21 the Maquoketa River which formed Backbone Lake; and
1 22 WHEREAS, after many decades of extensive
1 23 recreational use with limited financial resources for
1 24 maintenance, repairs, and improvements necessary to
1 25 meet the public demand, the Save the Backbone Lake
1 26 Committee was organized to provide volunteer services
1 27 for the Backbone Lake restoration to supplement
1 28 projects implemented by the Department of Natural
1 29 Resources; and
1 30 WHEREAS, the members of the Save the Backbone Lake
2 1 Committee contributed personal labor, equipment, and
2 2 moneys to remove thousands of tons of siltation and to
2 3 complete related improvement projects; NOW THEREFORE,
2 4 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, THE HOUSE OF
2 5 REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING, That the General Assembly,
2 6 on behalf of the State of Iowa, extends its
2 7 appreciation to the Save the Backbone Lake Committee
2 8 and all of its volunteers and contributors for the
2 9 restoration work contributed to the Backbone Lake
2 10 project; and
2 11 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Secretary of the
2 12 Senate shall transmit a copy of this Concurrent
2 13 Resolution to the chairperson of the Save the Backbone
2 14 Lake Committee.
