  1  1          SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. ___
  1  2                 BY  HARPER and REDFERN
  1  3 A Concurrent Resolution designating March 1998 as Iowa 
  1  4    Women's History Month.
  1  5    WHEREAS, this year, 1998, marks the 150th
  1  6 anniversary of the women's rights movement in the
  1  7 United States; and
  1  8    WHEREAS, Iowa women of every race, class, and
  1  9 ethnic background have made historic contributions to
  1 10 the growth and strength of our state and nation in
  1 11 countless recorded and unrecorded ways, including the
  1 12 struggle for women's rights; and
  1 13    WHEREAS, Iowa women have played and continue to
  1 14 play a critical economic, cultural, and social role by
  1 15 constituting a significant portion of the labor force,
  1 16 working inside and outside the home; and
  1 17    WHEREAS, Iowa women were particularly important in
  1 18 the establishment of early charitable, philanthropic,
  1 19 and cultural institutions in our state and the nation;
  1 20 and
  1 21    WHEREAS, Iowa women were leaders in the
  1 22 abolitionist movement, the emancipation movement, the
  1 23 industrial labor movement, the civil rights movement,
  1 24 the peace movement, and the women's suffrage movement,
  1 25 leading to a more equitable and just society for all;
  1 26 and
  1 27    WHEREAS, despite these contributions and those of
  1 28 women throughout the world, the role of women is
  1 29 consistently overlooked and undervalued in literature,
  1 30 teaching, and the study of history; NOW THEREFORE,
  2  1    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, THE HOUSE OF
  2  2 REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING, That the General Assembly
  2  3 designate the month of March 1998 as Iowa Women's
  2  4 History Month, and invite the citizens of Iowa to
  2  5 continue to uncover the roles women have played
  2  6 throughout history.
  2  7    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the General Assembly
  2  8 request that the Governor issue a proclamation calling
  2  9 upon the people of Iowa to observe Iowa Women's
  2 10 History Month with appropriate programs, ceremonies,
  2 11 and activities.
