  1  1    Amend Senate File 503 as follows:
  1  2    #1.  Page 5, by inserting after line 26 the
  1  3 following:
  1  4    "Sec. ___.  Section 901.8, Code 1997, is amended to
  1  5 read as follows:
  1  6    901.8  CONSECUTIVE SENTENCES.
  1  7    If a person is sentenced for two or more separate
  1  8 offenses, the sentencing judge may order the second or
  1  9 further sentence to begin at the expiration of the
  1 10 first or succeeding sentence.  If a person is
  1 11 sentenced for escape under section 719.4 or for a
  1 12 crime committed while confined in a detention facility
  1 13 or penal institution, the sentencing judge shall order
  1 14 the sentence to shall begin at the expiration of and
  1 15 shall run consecutively to any existing sentence.  If
  1 16 the person is presently in the custody of the director
  1 17 of the Iowa department of corrections, the sentence
  1 18 shall be served at the facility or institution in
  1 19 which the person is already confined unless the person
  1 20 is transferred by the director.  If consecutive
  1 21 sentences are required under this section or are
  1 22 specified in the order of commitment, the several
  1 23 terms shall be construed as one continuous term of
  1 24 imprisonment."
  1 25    #2.  Title page, line 11, by inserting after the
  1 26 words "offenses," the following:  "imposing
  1 27 consecutive sentences for escapes from or crimes
  1 28 committed while confined in detention facilities or
  1 29 penal institutions,".
