  1  1    Section 1.  Section 702.18, Code 1997, is amended to read
  1  2 as follows:
  1  3    702.18  SERIOUS INJURY.
  1  4    1.  "Serious injury" means disabling any of the following:
  1  5    a.  Disabling mental illness, or bodily.
  1  6    b.  Bodily injury which creates does any of the following:
  1  7    (1)  Creates a substantial risk of death or which causes.
  1  8    (2)  Causes serious permanent disfigurement, or.
  1  9    (3) Causes protracted loss or impairment of the function of
  1 10 any bodily member or organ, and.
  1 11    c.  Any injury to a child that requires surgical repair and
  1 12 necessitates the administration of general anesthesia.
  1 13    2.  "Serious injury" includes but is not limited to skull
  1 14 fractures, rib fractures, and metaphyseal fractures of the
  1 15 long bones of children under the age of four years.  
  1 16                           EXPLANATION
  1 17    This bill amends the definition of "serious injury" in the
  1 18 criminal code.  Any injury to a child that requires surgical
  1 19 repair using a general anesthetic is now defined as a serious
  1 20 injury.
