PAG LIN 1 1 Section 1. NEW SECTION. 13.32 VETERANS ADVOCATE. 1 2 1. APPOINTMENT. The attorney general shall appoint a 1 3 competent attorney to the office of veterans advocate, subject 1 4 to confirmation by the senate, in accordance with section 1 5 2.32. The veterans advocate is to be housed in the office of 1 6 the attorney general. The advocate shall be an honorably 1 7 discharged member of the armed forces of the United States. 1 8 The advocate's term of office is for four years. The term 1 9 begins and ends in the same manner as set forth in section 1 10 69.19. 1 11 2. VACANCY. If a vacancy occurs in the office of veterans 1 12 advocate, the vacancy shall be filled for the unexpired term 1 13 in the same manner as an original appointment under the 1 14 procedures of section 2.32. 1 15 3. REMOVAL. The attorney general may remove the veterans 1 16 advocate for malfeasance or nonfeasance in office, or for any 1 17 cause which renders the advocate ineligible for appointment, 1 18 or incapable or unfit to discharge the duties of the 1 19 advocate's office; and the advocate's removal, when so made, 1 20 is final. 1 21 Sec. 2. NEW SECTION. 13.33 DUTIES OF VETERANS ADVOCATE. 1 22 The veterans advocate shall do all of the following: 1 23 1. Assist the commission of veterans affairs created in 1 24 section 35A.2 in the carrying out of its duties. 1 25 2. Assist the veterans of the state in obtaining the 1 26 benefits to which they are entitled. 1 27 3. Assist the veterans of the state in gaining admission 1 28 to the Iowa veterans home in a timely manner. 1 29 4. Provide assistance to the county commissions of 1 30 veterans affairs created in chapter 35B in the carrying out of 1 31 their duties. 1 32 Sec. 3. NEW SECTION. 13.34 FUNDING. 1 33 There is appropriated annually from the general fund of the 1 34 state an amount sufficient to fund the cost of the position of 1 35 veterans advocate and the office of veterans advocate. 2 1 EXPLANATION 2 2 This bill establishes a position of veterans advocate under 2 3 the authority of the attorney general's office. The advocate 2 4 is to be appointed by the attorney general with confirmation 2 5 by the senate. The person selected for the post is to be an 2 6 attorney who has been honorably discharged from the military 2 7 service of the United States and will be housed in the office 2 8 of the attorney general.
