1 1 Section 1. Section 147.1, Code 1995, is amended by adding
1 2 the following new subsection:
1 3 NEW SUBSECTION. 11. "Surgery" means and includes surgical
1 4 procedures, surgical services, surgical treatments, operative
1 5 surgery, and surgical operations including but not limited to
1 6 the treatment and diagnosis of disease, conditions, injury,
1 7 and deformity by the alteration of human tissue by any
1 8 mechanical means; application of extreme cold, sonic waves,
1 9 laser, or ionizing radiation in which tissue is cut, burned,
1 10 frozen, vaporized, disrupted, or otherwise physically altered;
1 11 or any other procedure which is established by rule of the
1 12 board of medical examiners.
1 13 EXPLANATION
1 14 This bill provides a definition of "surgery" for the
1 15 purposes of the health-related professions chapter of the
1 16 Code. "Surgery" is currently not defined in the Code and the
1 17 definition in the bill specifies the procedures, services, and
1 18 treatments to be considered as surgery and also provides for
1 19 expansion of the definition through rule of the board of
1 20 medical examiners.
