1 2 BY COMMITTEE ON RULES AND ADMINISTRATION
1 3 (SUCCESSOR TO SR 112)
1 4 A Senate Resolution honoring Iowa State University
1 5 track and field coordinator and former head
1 6 men's cross country coach Bill Bergan on his
1 7 retirement.
1 8 WHEREAS, Coach Bill Bergan took over the Iowa State
1 9 University Cyclones men's track and field and cross
1 10 country programs when the programs consistently
1 11 finished in the lower division of the Big Eight
1 12 Conference and built the programs into national
1 13 powerhouses; and
1 14 WHEREAS, Coach Bill Bergan's cross country teams
1 15 won 10 Big Eight titles for Iowa State University and
1 16 captured the 1989 and 1994 National Collegiate
1 17 Athletic Association's cross country championships;
1 18 and
1 19 WHEREAS, Coach Bill Bergan's track and field teams
1 20 won 15 conference titles for Iowa State University;
1 21 and
1 22 WHEREAS, Coach Bill Bergan's athletes achieved All-
1 23 American honors 110 times and captured 163 Big Eight
1 24 Conference individual titles; and
1 25 WHEREAS, several of Coach Bill Bergan's athletes
1 26 went on to earn numerous awards in international
1 27 competition, including an Olympic silver medal in the
1 28 400-meter hurdles and a world record in the 10,000-
1 29 meter run; and
1 30 WHEREAS, Coach Bill Bergan was named to the Iowa
2 1 Association of Track Coaches Hall of Fame in 1984 and
2 2 earned National Collegiate Cross Country Coach of the
2 3 Year in 1983 and National Collegiate Track Coach of
2 4 the Year in 1986; and
2 5 WHEREAS, Coach Bill Bergan brought distinction and
2 6 honor to Iowa State University's track and field and
2 7 cross country programs; NOW THEREFORE,
2 8 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That Coach Bill
2 9 Bergan be congratulated on his retirement and for his
2 10 years of success at Iowa State University; and
2 11 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this
2 12 Resolution be sent to Coach Bill Bergan, Iowa State
2 13 University President Martin Jischke, Iowa State
2 14 University Athletic Director Gene Smith, and members
2 15 of the Iowa State University Cyclones men's and
2 16 women's track and field teams.
