1 1 SENATE RESOLUTION NO.
1 2 BY BLACK AND BOSWELL
1 3 A Senate Resolution honoring the Honorable Teng-Hui Lee,
1 4 President of the Republic of China.
1 5 WHEREAS, Iowa established a sister-state
1 6 relationship with the Taiwan Province of the Republic
1 7 of China on September 25, 1989, and Taiwan is a valued
1 8 trading partner of the United States and the State of
1 9 Iowa; and
1 10 WHEREAS, the Honorable Teng-Hui Lee garnered over
1 11 5.8 million votes, or 54 percent of the total ballots
1 12 cast, a landslide victory in his reelection on March
1 13 23, 1996, as the President of the Republic of China;
1 14 and
1 15 WHEREAS, this victory in the Republic of China's
1 16 first direct presidential election must be viewed as a
1 17 resounding show of support for Teng-Hui Lee's
1 18 leadership skills and high personal character; and
1 19 WHEREAS, President Teng-Hui Lee is a graduate of
1 20 Iowa State University of Science and Technology,
1 21 having received his master's degree from that
1 22 prestigious academic institution in 1953; and
1 23 WHEREAS, the citizens of Iowa are justifiably proud
1 24 of the accomplishments of Teng-Hui Lee, for his
1 25 leadership in the creation of the Republic of China's
1 26 market-based economic system, and the creation of an
1 27 open, democratic political system; and
1 28 WHEREAS, Iowans are proud of Teng-Hui Lee's many
1 29 accomplishments, his Iowa State University academic
1 30 "roots", and his exemplary role as a leader in the
2 1 free world; NOW THEREFORE,
2 2 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That President Teng-
2 3 Hui Lee be designated an "Honorary Citizen" of the
2 4 State of Iowa, and be blessed with health, wisdom,
2 5 peace, and goodwill for time to come; and
2 6 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That upon passage, an
2 7 official copy of this Resolution be sent to President
2 8 Teng-Hui Lee in Taipei, Taiwan.
