1 2 BY LIND
1 3 A Senate Resolution honoring Iowa State University
1 4 track and field coordinator and former head
1 5 men's cross country coach Bill Bergan on his
1 6 retirement.
1 7 WHEREAS, Coach Bill Bergan took over the Iowa State
1 8 University Cyclones men's track and field and cross
1 9 country programs when the programs consistently
1 10 finished in the lower division of the Big Eight
1 11 Conference and built the programs into national
1 12 powerhouses; and
1 13 WHEREAS, Coach Bill Bergan's cross country teams
1 14 won 10 Big Eight titles for Iowa State University and
1 15 captured the 1989 and 1994 National Collegiate
1 16 Athletic Association's cross country championships;
1 17 and
1 18 WHEREAS, Coach Bill Bergan's track and field teams
1 19 won 15 conference titles for Iowa State University;
1 20 and
1 21 WHEREAS, Coach Bill Bergan's athletes achieved All-
1 22 American honors 110 times and captured 163 Big Eight
1 23 Conference individual titles; and
1 24 WHEREAS, Several of Coach Bill Bergan's athletes
1 25 went on to earn numerous awards in international
1 26 competition, including an Olympic silver medal in the
1 27 400-meter hurdles and a world record in the 10,000-
1 28 meter run; and
1 29 WHEREAS, Coach Bill Bergan was named to the Iowa
1 30 Association of Track Coaches Hall of Fame in 1984 and
2 1 earned National Collegiate Cross Country Coach of the
2 2 Year in 1983 and National Collegiate Track Coach of
2 3 the Year in 1986; and
2 4 WHEREAS, Coach Bill Bergan brought distinction and
2 5 honor to Iowa State University's track and field and
2 6 cross country programs; NOW THEREFORE,
2 7 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That Coach Bill
2 8 Bergan be congratulated on his retirement and for his
2 9 years of success at Iowa State University; and
2 10 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this
2 11 Resolution be sent to Coach Bill Bergan, Iowa State
2 12 University President Martin Jischke, Iowa State
2 13 University Athletic Director Gene Smith, and members
2 14 of the Iowa State University Cyclones men's and
2 15 women's track and field teams.
