  1  1                SENATE RESOLUTION NO.    
  1  2                  BY  BLACK AND BOSWELL
  1  3 A Resolution recognizing June 22, 1996, as Morman Trail
  1  4    Day, in celebration of the sesquicentennial anniversary
  1  5    of the Mormon pioneer exodus of 1846.
  1  6    WHEREAS, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
  1  7 Saints was organized in Fayette, New York, in 1830 by
  1  8 Joseph Smith; and
  1  9    WHEREAS, the Saints, or Mormons as they became
  1 10 known, migrated to Missouri in the 1830s, where they
  1 11 remained until 1839, when religious intolerance drove
  1 12 them to Commerce, Illinois; and
  1 13    WHEREAS, the Mormons renamed the city Nauvoo, and
  1 14 by 1845 their numbers made Nauvoo the 10th largest
  1 15 city in the United States; and
  1 16    WHEREAS, Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum were
  1 17 jailed in Carthage, Illinois, charged with inciting a
  1 18 riot and two days later were assassinated by a mob at
  1 19 the county jail; and
  1 20    WHEREAS, fearing violence resulting from the
  1 21 religious intolerance of their neighbors, and facing
  1 22 divisive forces within their own community, in
  1 23 February 1846 the Mormons followed Brigham Young in
  1 24 the largest mass exodus in American history; and
  1 25    WHEREAS, the trail these pioneers blazed, 1,400
  1 26 miles from Nauvoo, Illinois, to Salt Lake City, Utah,
  1 27 running the width of Iowa from near Montrose to
  1 28 Council Bluffs, the Mormon Pioneer Trail, is now a
  1 29 National Historic Trail; and
  1 30    WHEREAS, though the Mormon pioneers experienced
  2  1 great hardships during their journey, their faith and
  2  2 determination eventually led 60,000 Mormon pioneers to
  2  3 create new lives in Utah, significantly expanding the
  2  4 borders of this country; and
  2  5    WHEREAS, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
  2  6 Saints and its members recognize with appreciation and
  2  7 thankfulness the people of the state of Iowa, who by
  2  8 their aid and protection exemplified the qualities of
  2  9 charity and hospitality; NOW THEREFORE,
  2 10    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the citizens of
  2 11 Iowa are encouraged to recognize and celebrate June
  2 12 22, 1996, as Mormon Trail Day, and to honor the
  2 13 courage and sacrifice of the Mormon pioneers in this,
  2 14 the sesquicentennial year of their migration across
  2 15 Iowa.
