1 2 BY COMMITTEE ON APPROPRIATIONS
1 3 (SUCCESSOR TO SSB 369)
1 4 A Resolution expressing appreciation to Hunter R.
1 5 Rawlings for his service as President of the
1 6 University of Iowa.
1 7 WHEREAS, Hunter R. Rawlings came to Iowa as
1 8 President of the University of Iowa on August 1, 1988,
1 9 and will soon commence his new responsibilities as
1 10 President of Cornell University; and
1 11 WHEREAS, President Rawlings identified the
1 12 importance of undergraduate education as a top
1 13 legislative priority and consistently sought the
1 14 resources to achieve this priority; and
1 15 WHEREAS, President Rawlings spearheaded efforts to
1 16 make the University of Iowa more student-friendly and
1 17 annually met individually with hundreds of students;
1 18 and
1 19 WHEREAS, President Rawlings worked to ensure a
1 20 comprehensive strategic planning process for the
1 21 University of Iowa, in part to achieve the goal of
1 22 making the University one of the top ten public
1 23 universities in the country; and
1 24 WHEREAS, President Rawlings' leadership has
1 25 contributed to the state's economy through the
1 26 development of the Oakdale Research Park and through
1 27 substantial increases in the receipt of research
1 28 grants and contracts; and
1 29 WHEREAS, President Rawlings worked hard to strike
1 30 the appropriate balance between academics and
2 1 athletics at the University; and
2 2 WHEREAS, President Rawlings reorganized the
2 3 structure of the University's health sciences center
2 4 in order to make the University competitive as dynamic
2 5 changes occur in health care; and
2 6 WHEREAS, President Rawlings consistently emphasized
2 7 the need to communicate with and reach out to the
2 8 constituents of the University and to the General
2 9 Assembly; and
2 10 WHEREAS, President Rawlings and his wife Elizabeth
2 11 brought respect and distinction to the University of
2 12 Iowa and to the State of Iowa through their dedicated
2 13 leadership and commitment to Iowa and the University
2 14 of Iowa; NOW THEREFORE,
2 15 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate
2 16 expresses its appreciation to Hunter R. Rawlings for
2 17 his service to the state as President of the
2 18 University of Iowa.
2 19 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Secretary of the
2 20 Senate prepare a copy of this Resolution for
2 21 presentation to Hunter R. Rawlings and his wife,
2 22 Elizabeth.
