1 1 Section 1. NEW SECTION. 13.32 VETERANS ADVOCATE.
1 2 The attorney general shall appoint a competent attorney to
1 3 the office of veterans advocate. The veterans advocate is to
1 4 be housed in the office of the attorney general. The advocate
1 5 shall be an honorably discharged member of the armed forces of
1 6 the United States. The advocate's term of office is for four
1 7 years. The term begins and ends in the same manner as set
1 8 forth in section 69.19.
1 9 Sec. 2. NEW SECTION. 13.33 DUTIES OF VETERANS ADVOCATE.
1 10 The veterans advocate shall do all of the following:
1 11 1. Assist the commission of veterans affairs created in
1 12 section 35A.2 in the carrying out of its duties.
1 13 2. Assist the veterans of the state in obtaining the
1 14 benefits to which they are entitled.
1 15 3. Assist the veterans of the state in gaining admission
1 16 to the Iowa veterans home in a timely manner.
1 17 4. Provide assistance to the county commissions of
1 18 veterans affairs created in chapter 35B in the carrying out of
1 19 their duties.
1 20 EXPLANATION
1 21 This bill establishes a position of veterans advocate under
1 22 the authority of the attorney general's office. The advocate
1 23 is to be appointed by the attorney general. The person
1 24 selected for the post is to be an attorney who has been
1 25 honorably discharged from the military service of the United
1 26 States and will be housed in the office of the attorney
1 27 general.
