  1  1    Section 1.  Section 153.15, Code 1995, is amended to read
  1  2 as follows:
  1  3    153.15  DENTAL HYGIENISTS &endash; SCOPE OF TERM &endash; SUPERVISION
  1  4 BY DENTIST.
  1  5    A licensed dental hygienist may perform those services
  1  6 which are educational, therapeutic, and preventive in nature
  1  7 which attain or maintain optimal oral health as determined by
  1  8 the board of dentistry and may include but are not necessarily
  1  9 limited to complete oral prophylaxis, application of
  1 10 preventive agents to oral structures, exposure and processing
  1 11 of radiographs, administration of medicaments prescribed by a
  1 12 licensed dentist, obtaining and preparing nonsurgical,
  1 13 clinical and oral diagnostic tests for interpretation by the
  1 14 dentist, preparation of preliminary written records of oral
  1 15 conditions for interpretation by the dentist.  A licensed
  1 16 dental hygienist shall perform all services authorized in this
  1 17 section under the general supervision of a dentist currently
  1 18 licensed and actively practicing in Iowa.  General supervision
  1 19 means that a dentist has authorized the services that the
  1 20 dental hygienist provides.  The supervising dentist need not
  1 21 be present in the facility while the dental hygienist performs
  1 22 the services.  Each supervising dentist shall determine the
  1 23 extent of the authorization and the duration of the
  1 24 authorization according to the individual needs of the patient
  1 25 and the dentist's professional judgment.  Such These services
  1 26 shall be performed under supervision of a licensed dentist and
  1 27 in a dental office, a public or private school, public health
  1 28 agencies, hospitals, and the armed forces, but nothing herein
  1 29 shall be construed to authorize in this section authorizes a
  1 30 dental hygienist to practice dentistry.  
  1 31                           EXPLANATION
  1 32    This bill defines the general supervision of a licensed
  1 33 dentist over a licensed dental hygienist.
