1 2 BY COMMITTEE ON EDUCATION
1 3 (SUCCESSOR TO SCR 120)
1 4 A Concurrent Resolution honoring Ms. Jorie Graham, the
1 5 1996 Pulitizer Prize winner in the field of poetry.
1 6 WHEREAS, Ms. Jorie Graham is a graduate of New York
1 7 University and the University of Iowa Writers'
1 8 Workshop, and has taught at several universities,
1 9 including Columbia University and the University of
1 10 Iowa; and
1 11 WHEREAS, Ms. Graham is a published author of
1 12 several books and pieces of poetry and prose in many
1 13 magazines and journals, including the prestigious Iowa
1 14 Review, published at the University of Iowa; and
1 15 WHEREAS, Ms. Graham possesses diverse experience as
1 16 a writer, poet, editor, and teacher; and
1 17 WHEREAS, Ms. Graham has won the 1996 Pulitzer Prize
1 18 in Poetry, presented by Columbia University, for her
1 19 book entitled "The Dream of the Unified Field: New
1 20 and Selected Poems"; and
1 21 WHEREAS, the Pulitzer Prize is the most prestigious
1 22 award for writing granted in America; and
1 23 WHEREAS, Ms. Graham is the twenty-third faculty
1 24 member or student from the University of Iowa to have
1 25 won a Pulitizer Prize, and therefore brings further
1 26 distinction to the University of Iowa and its Writers'
1 27 Workshop, which is widely regarded as the premier
1 28 creative writing university degree program in the
1 29 United States; NOW THEREFORE,
1 30 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, THE HOUSE OF
2 1 REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING, That the General Assembly
2 2 of Iowa recognize and honor Ms. Jorie Graham for her
2 3 lifetime of work and achievements, and especially for
2 4 her outstanding accomplishment in winning the 1996
2 5 Pulitzer Prize in Poetry.
2 6 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That an official copy of
2 7 this resolution be prepared for presentation to Ms.
2 8 Graham.
