1 1 SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO.
1 2 BY KIBBIE
1 3 A Senate Concurrent Resolution to urge the federal
1 4 government to restore requirements for the
1 5 reporting of information regarding cattle fed
1 6 in Iowa feedlots.
1 7 WHEREAS, the production of livestock by this
1 8 nation's farmers and ranchers represents a critical
1 9 component of this nation's prosperity; and
1 10 WHEREAS, the state of Iowa consistently ranks among
1 11 the top cattle producing states in this nation; and
1 12 WHEREAS, the National Agricultural Statistics
1 13 Service of the United States Department of Agriculture
1 14 provides an essential function by surveying feedlots
1 15 in this state and other states on a monthly basis in
1 16 order to report information regarding cattle feedlots,
1 17 including cattle inventories, the number of cattle
1 18 placed on feed, and the number of cattle marketed; and
1 19 WHEREAS, the National Agricultural Statistics
1 20 Service has amended its practice to only survey
1 21 feedlots in the nation having a capacity of 1,000 or
1 22 more cattle; and
1 23 WHEREAS, the state of Iowa is unique among cattle
1 24 producing states because it relies upon approximately
1 25 1,500 small feedlots, each having a capacity of less
1 26 than 1,000 cattle, operated by farmer-feeders, who
1 27 raise between 50 and 60 percent of all cattle fed in
1 28 this state, compared to the 300 large feedlots in the
1 29 state each having a capacity to feed 1,000 or more
1 30 cattle; NOW THEREFORE,
2 1 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, THE HOUSE OF
2 2 REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING, That the National
2 3 Agricultural Statistics Service of the United States
2 4 Department of Agriculture is urged to reinstate its
2 5 practice of surveying all feedlots in this state in
2 6 order to ensure accurate and dependable reporting
2 7 information; and
2 8 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this
2 9 resolution be sent by the Secretary of the Senate to
2 10 the President of the United States; the United States
2 11 Secretary of Agriculture; the Administrator of the
2 12 National Agricultural Statistics Service of the United
2 13 States Department of Agriculture; the President of the
2 14 United States Senate; the Speaker of the United States
2 15 House of Representatives; and members of Iowa's
2 16 congressional delegation.
