  1  1          SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO.    
  1  2               BY  COMMITTEE ON JUDICIARY
  1  3                 (SUCCESSOR TO SSB 2175)
  1  4 A Concurrent Resolution posthumously honoring Mr. John L.
  1  5    Mowry and recognizing his many contributions to city,
  1  6    state, and federal government.
  1  7    WHEREAS, Mr. Mowry was born in Baxter, Iowa, on
  1  8 December 15, 1905, graduated from Marshalltown High
  1  9 School, in 1924, where he was president of the senior
  1 10 class and a member of varsity football and basketball
  1 11 teams; and
  1 12    WHEREAS, Mr. Mowry, after receiving his bachelor of
  1 13 arts degree from Ohio State University and his law
  1 14 degree from the University of Iowa, began his long,
  1 15 colorful career as a special agent for the Federal
  1 16 Bureau of Investigation assigned to New York; and
  1 17    WHEREAS, Mr. Mowry returned to Iowa briefly to
  1 18 serve as county attorney for Marshall County from 1938
  1 19 to 1941; and
  1 20    WHEREAS, during World War II, Mr. Mowry was
  1 21 assigned to the Intelligence Unit of the Materiel
  1 22 Command of the Army Air Forces and stationed in
  1 23 Philadelphia; and
  1 24    WHEREAS, after World War II, Mr. Mowry was
  1 25 appointed Deputy Liquor Commissioner for the State of
  1 26 New York by Governor Thomas E. Dewey; and
  1 27    WHEREAS, Mr. Mowry never forgot his Iowa roots
  1 28 during the years he lived on the east coast, returning
  1 29 to Iowa in 1950 to become Marshalltown's mayor; and
  1 30    WHEREAS, after five years as Marshalltown's mayor,
  2  1 Mr. Mowry chose to continue his public service to his
  2  2 community as its elected representative to the Iowa
  2  3 General Assembly; and
  2  4    WHEREAS, Mr. Mowry is remembered by friends at the
  2  5 Iowa General Assembly as a man of conviction, who,
  2  6 while serving five terms in the Iowa House of
  2  7 Representatives, served as majority floor leader and
  2  8 chair of the Judiciary Committee, and who, while
  2  9 serving two terms in the Iowa Senate, served as chair
  2 10 of the Commerce Committee; and
  2 11    WHEREAS, during his distinguished lifetime, Mr.
  2 12 Mowry was a trustee of the Susie Sower Trust for the
  2 13 benefit of the Historical Society of Marshall County
  2 14 and was an active, lifetime member of the First
  2 15 Presbyterian Church and the American, Iowa, Marshall
  2 16 County, and New York bar associations; and
  2 17    WHEREAS, the death of Mr. John L. Mowry on
  2 18 Wednesday morning, November 1, 1995, has saddened the
  2 19 citizens of Marshall County and constitutes a loss for
  2 20 the City of Marshalltown; NOW THEREFORE,
  2 21    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, THE HOUSE OF
  2 22 REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING, That the General Assembly
  2 23 posthumously honor Mr. John L. Mowry, recognizing his
  2 24 life's many accomplishments and his deep commitment to
  2 25 public service, Marshall County, and to his beloved
  2 26 Marshalltown; and
  2 27    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Secretary of the
  2 28 Senate send copies of this Resolution to the City of
  2 29 Marshalltown and to Mr. Mowry's daughter, Mrs. Madelyn
  2 30 Irvine.
