1 1 SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO.
1 2 BY KIBBIE and RENSINK
1 3 A Concurrent Resolution urging the United States
1 4 Congress to authorize construction of the
1 5 Lewis and Clark rural water system.
1 6 WHEREAS, the Lewis and Clark rural water system was
1 7 envisioned and organized to supply a safe and adequate
1 8 drinking water supply to 180,000 residents of
1 9 northwestern Iowa, southeastern South Dakota, and
1 10 southwestern Minnesota; and
1 11 WHEREAS, five communities and two rural water
1 12 systems in northwest Iowa, representing 24,000
1 13 residents of Iowa, joined the Lewis and Clark rural
1 14 water system in hope of solving existing problems
1 15 relating to inadequate supplies and poor quality of
1 16 drinking water; and
1 17 WHEREAS, the 1993 Session of the Iowa General
1 18 Assembly enacted legislation authorizing federal,
1 19 state, and local governments to cooperate in managing
1 20 and administering rural water districts; and
1 21 WHEREAS, federal legislation authorizing
1 22 construction of the Lewis and Clark rural water system
1 23 and federal, state, and local government cost-sharing
1 24 to assist project sponsors in building the project has
1 25 been introduced in the United States Congress; NOW
1 26 THEREFORE,
1 27 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, THE HOUSE OF
1 28 REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING, That the 1996 Session of
1 29 the Iowa General Assembly is committed to supporting
1 30 the Lewis and Clark rural water system and urges
2 1 congressional approval of federal legislation
2 2 authorizing the construction of the Lewis and Clark
2 3 rural water system.
2 4 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this
2 5 resolution be sent by the Secretary of the Senate to
2 6 the members of Iowa's congressional delegation.
