1 1 SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
1 2 BY FREEMAN
1 3 A Senate Concurrent Resolution commemorating the veterans
1 4 of the United States armed forces who fought and won
1 5 the Battle of the Bulge during World War II.
1 6 WHEREAS, on June 6, l944, the Allied Forces under
1 7 the command of General Dwight D. Eisenhower began an
1 8 assault on western Europe which systematically
1 9 dislodged the armed forces of Nazi Germany from France
1 10 and parts of Belgium and Luxembourg during the summer
1 11 and fall of 1944; and
1 12 WHEREAS, the final major German counteroffensive of
1 13 World War II, which became known as the Battle of the
1 14 Bulge, began in Belgium on December 16, 1944, and was
1 15 repulsed in January 1945; and
1 16 WHEREAS, during the height of the battle and while
1 17 surrounded by German forces with superior numbers of
1 18 soldiers and weapons, the sacrifices and heroic acts
1 19 of American soldiers became legendary; and
1 20 WHEREAS, names and locations such as Ardennes, St.
1 21 Vith, and Bastogne are now an unforgettable part of
1 22 American military history; NOW THEREFORE,
1 23 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, THE HOUSE OF
1 24 REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING, That the Iowa General
1 25 Assembly commemorates the valiant efforts of the
1 26 American armed forces during the Battle of the Bulge
1 27 more than 50 years ago.
1 28 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Iowa General
1 29 Assembly wishes the American veterans of the Battle of
1 30 the Bulge a pleasant and memorable reunion during June
2 1 28 through 30, 1996, in Storm Lake, Iowa.
2 2 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Secretary of the
2 3 Senate send a copy of this concurrent resolution to
2 4 the chairperson of the Battle of the Bulge American
2 5 veterans reunion.
