1 3 A Concurrent Resolution urging support of public
1 4 broadcasting in Iowa.
1 5 WHEREAS, Iowans have long appreciated the value
1 6 provided by our public television stations and public
1 7 radio stations; and
1 8 WHEREAS, public radio and television in this state
1 9 perform an important educational function for Iowa
1 10 citizens, including students; and
1 11 WHEREAS, public radio and television provide
1 12 distinguished programs of journalism at both the
1 13 national and state levels; and
1 14 WHEREAS, public radio and television bring Iowans
1 15 closer to their government by providing coverage of
1 16 legislative debates and the Governor's condition of
1 17 the state address; and
1 18 WHEREAS, public radio and television provide a rich
1 19 alternative to commercial broadcasting stations by
1 20 providing a variety of cultural, musical, and
1 21 historical programs to Iowans; and
1 22 WHEREAS, adequate funding for public radio and
1 23 television in this state is essential to continue the
1 24 quality programming provided to Iowans; and
1 25 WHEREAS, the Congress of the United States is
1 26 considering reducing the level of federal funding for
1 27 the Corporation for Public Broadcasting; and
1 28 WHEREAS, federal funding provides a significant
1 29 level of support for public television and radio in
1 30 this state; and
2 1 WHEREAS, Iowans have long cooperated with one
2 2 another to protect programs deemed important to the
2 3 quality of life in this state; NOW THEREFORE,
2 4 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, THE HOUSE OF
2 5 REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING, That the Iowa General
2 6 Assembly expresses its support and appreciation for
2 7 the importance and quality of public broadcasting in
2 8 Iowa through the eight public television stations and
2 9 12 public radio stations that serve Iowans.
2 10 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Iowa General
2 11 Assembly calls on all Iowans who watch, listen to, and
2 12 support public broadcasting and its programs in this
2 13 state to support the state's public broadcasting
2 14 stations through financial gifts and other means.
2 15 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this
2 16 resolution be sent to the executive director of Iowa
2 17 Public Television, the station managers of the public
2 18 television and public radio stations in this state,
2 19 and members of Iowa's congressional delegation.
