1 1 Section 1. Section 347.16, subsection 3, Code 1995, is
1 2 amended to read as follows:
1 3 3. Care and treatment may be furnished in a county public
1 4 hospital to any sick or injured person who has legal
1 5 settlement outside the county which maintains the hospital,
1 6 subject to such policies and rules as the board of hospital
1 7 trustees may adopt. If care and treatment is provided under
1 8 this subsection to a person who is indigent, the county in
1 9 which that person has legal settlement shall pay to the board
1 10 of hospital trustees the fair and reasonable cost of the care
1 11 and treatment provided by the county public hospital unless
1 12 the cost of the indigent person's care and treatment is
1 13 otherwise provided for. If care and treatment is furnished to
1 14 an indigent person under this subsection, the hospital
1 15 furnishing care and treatment shall immediately notify, by
1 16 regular mail, the auditor of the county in which the indigent
1 17 person has legal settlement of the cost of the care and
1 18 treatment furnished, unless the costs are otherwise provided
1 19 for.
1 20 EXPLANATION
1 21 This bill requires a county public hospital which furnishes
1 22 care and treatment to an indigent person who has legal
1 23 settlement in another county, to immediately notify, by mail,
1 24 the auditor of the county of legal settlement of the indigent
1 25 person of the cost of care and treatment furnished, unless the
1 26 costs are otherwise provided for.
