1 1 Section 1. The following amendment to the Constitution of
1 2 the State of Iowa is proposed.
1 3 Section 1 of Article I of the Constitution of the State of
1 4 Iowa, is amended to read as follows:
1 5 RIGHTS OF PERSONS. Section 1. All men and women are, by
1 6 nature, free and equal, and have certain inalienable rights &endash;
1 7 among which are those of enjoying and defending life and
1 8 liberty, acquiring, possessing and protecting property, and
1 9 pursuing and obtaining safety and happiness.
1 10 Sec. 2. The foregoing amendment to the Constitution of the
1 11 State of Iowa is referred to the General Assembly to be chosen
1 12 at the next general election for members of the General
1 13 Assembly and the Secretary of State is directed to cause the
1 14 same to be published for three consecutive months previous to
1 15 the date of that election as provided by law.
1 16 EXPLANATION
1 17 This joint resolution proposes and amendment to the
1 18 Constitution of the State of Iowa, for adoption by the second
1 19 consecutive general assembly, which would provide for equality
1 20 of rights under the law for both men and women. The
1 21 resolution, if adopted, would be referred to the next general
1 22 assembly before being submitted to the electorate for
1 23 ratification.
