1 3 (COMPANION TO LSB 1348SS BY BLACK)
1 4 A Concurrent Resolution supporting the United Nations'
1 5 recognition of the Republic of China on Taiwan.
1 6 WHEREAS, the Republic of China was a founding member of the
1 7 United Nations in 1945, and was consistently faithful to the
1 8 goals and objectives of the United Nations for 26 years; and
1 9 WHEREAS, in 1971, the United Nations General Assembly
1 10 excluded the Republic of China in order to recognize the
1 11 mainland People's Republic of China; and
1 12 WHEREAS, the United Nations has allowed other divided
1 13 countries such as East and West Germany and North and South
1 14 Korea to be equal members of the United Nations organization;
1 15 and
1 16 WHEREAS, on August 6, 1993, seven Central American
1 17 countries presented an initiative to the Secretary General of
1 18 the United Nations, calling for the Republic of China's
1 19 readmission to the United Nations; and
1 20 WHEREAS, readmission of the Republic of China would be in
1 21 keeping with the primary mission of the United Nations of
1 22 promoting international peace and security; and
1 23 WHEREAS, the state of Iowa and several cities in Iowa have
1 24 established formal sister state and sister city relationships
1 25 with regions and cities in the Republic of China; and
1 26 WHEREAS, the United States and Iowa are significant trading
1 27 partners as evidenced by the fact that the Republic of China
1 28 has purchased more than $16 billion in American products this
1 29 past year; NOW THEREFORE,
1 30 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, THE SENATE
1 31 CONCURRING, that the Iowa General Assembly supports the United
1 32 Nations' recognition and readmission of the Republic of China.
1 33 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be
1 34 transmitted to the United Nations General Assembly and the
1 35 Honorable Bill Clinton, President of the United States.
1 36 We, Ron J. Corbett, Speaker of the House and Leonard L.
1 37 Boswell, President of the Senate; Elizabeth A. Isaacson, Chief
1 38 Clerk of the House, and John F. Dwyer, Secretary of the
1 39 Senate, hereby certify that the above and foregoing Resolution
1 40 was adopted by the House of Representatives and the Senate of
1 41 the Seventy-sixth General Assembly.
