1 3 A Resolution honoring Charlie Wittmack on reaching the
1 4 summit of Mount Everest.
1 5 WHEREAS, in May 2003, Charlie Wittmack of Des
1 6 Moines became the first Iowan to successfully climb
1 7 Mount Everest, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of
1 8 the first summit of the mountain by Sir Edmund Hillary
1 9 and Tenzing Norgay; and
1 10 WHEREAS, Charlie Wittmack battled extreme cold,
1 11 blinding snow, high winds, hunger, frostbite, and a
1 12 broken shoe spike to reach the summit on his third
1 13 attempt at the summit from Camp IV; and
1 14 WHEREAS, after climbing to the summit of Mount
1 15 Everest, he experienced a harrowing descent because of
1 16 the broken shoe spike; and
1 17 WHEREAS, the descent from the summit to Camp III
1 18 took 10 hours to complete and, upon reaching the camp,
1 19 he spent the night without food or water; and
1 20 WHEREAS, Charlie Wittmack has shown great courage
1 21 and has now joined a select group of approximately
1 22 1,200 climbers from around the world who have
1 23 successfully climbed Mount Everest; and
1 24 WHEREAS, Charlie Wittmack shared his Mount Everest
1 25 achievement with the people of Iowa by stating, "I
1 26 have learned that an individual is only as strong as
1 27 the network that supports him. As I stand here on top
1 28 of the world, it is an achievement that reflects on
1 29 the entire state of Iowa, and the spirit and teamwork
1 30 of her people. This victory we all share together.";

2 2 WHEREAS, in addition to sharing his Mount Everest
2 3 achievement with the people of Iowa, Charlie Wittmack
2 4 rode a bicycle across the United States promoting the
2 5 state during the Iowa 150 Bike Ride – A
2 6 Sesquicentennial Expedition; NOW THEREFORE,
2 7 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate
2 8 salutes Charlie Wittmack, the grandson of former
2 9 Governor Norman Erbe, as a truly great Iowan, and
2 10 congratulates him on his successful climb of Mount
2 11 Everest and thanks him for the excitement he brought
2 12 to the State of Iowa.
