  1  1                SENATE RESOLUTION NO. __
  1  2                        BY  HOSCH
  1  3 A Resolution honoring the City of Hopkinton on its
  1  4    sesquicentennial year.
  1  5    WHEREAS, the City of Hopkinton evolved from a
  1  6 settlement which originated in the late 1840s in close
  1  7 proximity to sawmills erected on the Maquoketa River
  1  8 and Plum Creek; and
  1  9    WHEREAS, the community experienced a rapid influx
  1 10 of settlers in the early 1850s based on this
  1 11 proximity; and
  1 12    WHEREAS, the town newspaper, The Hopkinton Leader,
  1 13 was owned at the turn of the century by Mr. Frank F.
  1 14 Merriam, who later became the Governor of California;
  1 15 and
  1 16    WHEREAS, Lenox College was founded in Hopkinton in
  1 17 1859, and is presently maintained by the Delaware
  1 18 County Historical Society as a nine-building museum
  1 19 complex listed on the National Register of Historic
  1 20 Places; and
  1 21    WHEREAS, on May 17, 1864, all but two of the
  1 22 college's male students answered the call to fight in
  1 23 the Civil War, resulting in the college being known as
  1 24 the "Home of the Schoolboy Company"; and
  1 25    WHEREAS, this participation was commemorated on the
  1 26 Lenox College campus in 1865 by a Civil War monument
  1 27 inscribed with the names of students who died during
  1 28 the Civil War, and is remembered annually during the
  1 29 community's Civil War Days celebration; and
  1 30    WHEREAS, the Civil War monument was the first such
  2  1 monument erected on a college campus; NOW THEREFORE,
  2  2    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate
  2  3 recognizes and extends its congratulations to the City
  2  4 of Hopkinton on its sesquicentennial anniversary year
  2  5 and for its 150 years of service to its citizens and
  2  6 to the State of Iowa; and
  2  7    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That an official copy of
  2  8 this Resolution be prepared and presented to the
  2  9 Honorable Mr. Dan Tucker, Mayor of the City of
  2 10 Hopkinton.
