1 2 BY COURTNEY
1 3 A Resolution calling for the observance of Workers
1 4 Memorial Day.
1 5 WHEREAS, each year, workers across the nation set
1 6 aside a special day to commemorate those among them
1 7 who have died while on the job; and
1 8 WHEREAS, in spite of the efforts of Iowa workers
1 9 and employers to improve the safety of the workplace,
1 10 accidental death in the workplace continues to occur
1 11 in our state; and
1 12 WHEREAS, in the year 2002, 52 Iowa workers died
1 13 while at work, either from violence, falls, vehicle
1 14 accidents, or as the result of unsafe working
1 15 conditions; and
1 16 WHEREAS, this tragic loss of life reinforces the
1 17 resolve of Iowans to continue to foster a safe working
1 18 environment; and
1 19 WHEREAS, this year, Workers Memorial Day will be
1 20 observed on April 28, 2003, with a memorial service at
1 21 noon at the east side of the Iowa Workforce
1 22 Development Office at 1000 Grand Avenue in Des Moines;
1 23 NOW THEREFORE,
1 24 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Iowa Senate
1 25 honors the 52 Iowa workers whose lives were lost in
1 26 2002 and calls for the observance of Workers Memorial
1 27 Day on April 28, 2003.
