PAG LIN 1 1 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. __ 1 2 BY KRAMER 1 3 A Resolution honoring the Iowa members of the United 1 4 States Naval Armed Guard who served during World War II. 1 5 WHEREAS, In October 1941 the United States Navy 1 6 organized an Armed Guard to provide gun crews for duty 1 7 aboard the nation's merchant ships, just as it had 1 8 done in World War I; and 1 9 WHEREAS, the 144,970 men who volunteered for duty 1 10 in the Naval Armed Guard Service in World War II 1 11 played a key role in ensuring the delivery of 1 12 essential cargo and supplies to the Allied forces; and 1 13 WHEREAS, the Naval Armed Guard manned 6,236 1 14 American and Allied ships during the war, many of them 1 15 slow-moving ships packed with explosives or tankers 1 16 carrying aviation fuel, and 710 of those ships were 1 17 sunk as a result of enemy action; and 1 18 WHEREAS, the members of the Naval Armed Guard were 1 19 generally regarded as some of the finest officers, gun 1 20 crewmen, signalmen, and radiomen in the entire Navy, 1 21 and they performed an exceptionally dangerous duty 1 22 with courage, honor, and commitment; and 1 23 WHEREAS, by the end of the war, as many as 1,810 of 1 24 those heroic men were killed or lost at sea, and many 1 25 more were wounded; and 1 26 WHEREAS, there are 225 surviving members of the 1 27 Naval Armed Guard living here in Iowa today who have 1 28 earned the admiration and gratitude of all Americans; 1 29 NOW THEREFORE, 1 30 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Iowa Senate 2 1 recognizes the service and sacrifice of the officers 2 2 and men of the United States Naval Armed Guard Service 2 3 who valiantly defended the essential supply lines of 2 4 the Allied forces all over the world and at every 2 5 battle of World War II; and 2 6 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the citizens of Iowa 2 7 are especially indebted to the Iowa members of the 2 8 Naval Armed Guard for the exceptional contribution 2 9 they made in the service of their country. 2 10 LSB 3506SS 80 2 11 dea/cl
