  1 1 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. ___
1 2 BY ANGELO and McKINLEY
1 3 A Resolution urging the United States Postal Service
1 4 to issue a commemorative postage stamp honoring
  1 5 America's coal miners.
1 6 WHEREAS, United States coal miners perform a unique
1 7 and vital service for the nation because without a man
1 8 or woman at the controls of a dragline or working in a
1 9 darkened mine shaft, coal would not tumble into the
1 10 trucks and barges that crisscross the country to power
1 11 the boilers that generate over 50 percent of the
  1 12 nation's electricity; and
1 13 WHEREAS, coal miners keep the nation supplied with
1 14 an energy resource that produces electricity at low
1 15 cost which makes possible the country's unmatched
1 16 productivity and prosperity as well as buffering the
1 17 nation from a dangerous dependence on foreign energy
  1 18 fuels; and
1 19 WHEREAS, the coal industry in Iowa played an
1 20 important role in the state's social and economic
1 21 history by fueling the expansion of railroads, making
1 22 travel and the shipment of supplies much easier across
  1 23 Iowa; and
1 24 WHEREAS, the coal mines in central and southern
1 25 Iowa stimulated industrial activity in an otherwise
1 26 largely agricultural state and employed thousands of
1 27 immigrating miners and their descendants, thereby
1 28 establishing a cultural diversity that remains to this
  1 29 day; and
1 30 WHEREAS, coal miners in Iowa and throughout the
2 1 nation benefited from the labors of John L. Lewis,
2 2 born in Lucas, Iowa, in 1880, whose organization of
2 3 coal miners brought better working conditions, wages,
2 4 benefits, and increased safety to miners across the
2 5 country, and whose legacy is preserved in the John L.
2 6 Lewis Memorial Museum of Mining and Labor located in
  2 7 Lucas, Iowa; and
2 8 WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the
2 9 contributions and sacrifices of these citizens of the
2 10 United States and Iowa be recognized and honored; NOW
  2 11 THEREFORE,
2 12 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate urges
2 13 the United States Postal Service to issue a
2 14 commemorative postage stamp honoring America's coal
  2 15 miners; and
2 16 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That upon adoption, a copy
2 17 of this Resolution be sent to the United States
2 18 Postmaster General and to the Citizens' Stamp Advisory
  2 19 Committee, c/o Stamp Development, U.S. Postal Service,
  2 20 475 L'Enfant SW, Room 5670, Washington, D.C. 20260-
