1 1 SENATE RESOLUTION NO.
1 2 BY RAGAN
1 3 A Resolution honoring the city of St. Ansgar and the
1 4 First Lutheran Church on their sesquicentennial year.
1 5 WHEREAS, the city of St. Ansgar, founded in 1853 by
1 6 Reverend Claus L. Clausen, a Danish minister, is
1 7 celebrating its 150th anniversary; and
1 8 WHEREAS, St. Ansgar is the home of the First
1 9 Lutheran Church which was also founded by Reverend
1 10 Claus L. Clausen and is celebrating its 150th
1 11 anniversary; and
1 12 WHEREAS, the First Lutheran Church is the oldest
1 13 Norwegian Lutheran church west of the Mississippi
1 14 River that has been in continuous use, and is on the
1 15 National Register of Historic Places; and
1 16 WHEREAS, St. Ansgar, which means "God's spear", was
1 17 named by Reverend Clausen for a French missionary who
1 18 took Christianity to the Scandinavian countries and is
1 19 the only known city with that name in the world; and
1 20 WHEREAS, the city of St. Ansgar is known as "The
1 21 Garden Spot of Iowa"; and
1 22 WHEREAS, St. Ansgar is a proud community with many
1 23 modern services and accomplishments in industry,
1 24 medical care, recreation, retirement, education,
1 25 churches, fire protection, and merchandising; and
1 26 WHEREAS, St. Ansgar and the First Lutheran Church
1 27 are proud of their heritage and will be celebrating
1 28 their 150th anniversary June 21-22, 2003; NOW
1 29 THEREFORE,
1 30 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate
2 1 recognizes and extends its congratulations to the city
2 2 of St. Ansgar on its sesquicentennial anniversary year
2 3 and for its 150 years of service to its citizens and
2 4 to the State of Iowa; and
2 5 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Senate extends its
2 6 congratulations to the First Lutheran Church for its
2 7 150 years of service; and
2 8 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That an official copy of
2 9 this Resolution be prepared and presented to the
2 10 Honorable Marion Neeley, Mayor of the city of St.
2 11 Ansgar, and to Mr. Richard Sherman, chairman of the
2 12 congregation of the First Lutheran Church.
