1 8 A Resolution urging the United States Postal Service
1 9 to issue a commemorative postage stamp honoring
  1 10 America's coal miners.
1 11 WHEREAS, United States coal miners perform a unique
1 12 and vital service for the nation because without a man
1 13 or woman at the controls of a dragline or working in a
1 14 darkened mine shaft, coal would not tumble into the
1 15 trucks and barges that crisscross the country to power
1 16 the boilers that generate over 50 percent of the
  1 17 nation's electricity; and
1 18 WHEREAS, coal miners keep the nation supplied with
1 19 an energy resource that produces electricity at low

1 21 productivity and prosperity as well as buffering the
1 22 nation from a dangerous dependence on foreign energy
  1 23 fuels; and
1 24 WHEREAS, the coal industry in Iowa played an
1 25 important role in the state's social and economic
1 26 history by fueling the expansion of railroads, making
1 27 travel and the shipment of supplies much easier across
  1 28 Iowa; and
1 29 WHEREAS, the coal mines in central and southern
1 30 Iowa stimulated industrial activity in an otherwise
2 1 largely agricultural state and employed thousands of
2 2 immigrating miners and their descendants, thereby
2 3 establishing a cultural diversity that remains to this
  2 4 day; and
2 5 WHEREAS, coal miners in Iowa and throughout the
2 6 nation benefited from the labors of John L. Lewis,
2 7 born in Lucas, Iowa, in 1880, whose organization of
2 8 coal miners brought better working conditions, wages,
2 9 benefits, and increased safety to miners across the
2 10 country, and whose legacy is preserved in the John L.
2 11 Lewis Memorial Museum of Mining and Labor located in
  2 12 Lucas, Iowa; and
2 13 WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the
2 14 contributions and sacrifices of these citizens of the
2 15 United States and Iowa be recognized and honored; NOW
  2 16 THEREFORE,
2 17 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES,
2 18 That the House of Representatives urges the United
2 19 States Postal Service to issue a commemorative postage
2 20 stamp honoring America's coal miners; and
2 21 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That upon adoption, a copy
2 22 of this Resolution be sent to the United States
2 23 Postmaster General and to the Citizens' Stamp Advisory
