  1 19 A Resolution to honor the crew of the space shuttle
  1 20    Columbia.
  1 21    WHEREAS, on January 16, 2003, America's first space
  1 22 shuttle, the space shuttle Columbia, was launched on a
  1 23 peaceful science mission and made headlines because of
  1 24 the membership on the crew of the first Israeli
  1 25 astronaut; and
  1 26    WHEREAS, during the course of that mission, the
  1 27 shuttle astronauts completed more than 80 scientific
  1 28 experiments for the benefit of humankind; and
  1 29    WHEREAS, on February 1, 2003, at 9:00 a.m., just 16
  1 30 minutes before Columbia was scheduled to land, the
  2  1 National Aeronautics and Space Administration's
  2  2 Mission Control in Houston, Texas, lost contact with
  2  3 the shuttle and soon learned that both Columbia and
  2  4 its brave crew of seven were lost; and
  2  5    WHEREAS, one of these seven courageous astronauts,
  2  6 Commander Laurel Clark, was born in Ames, Iowa, and
  2  7 lived there for two years while her father studied at
  2  8 Iowa State University of Science and Technology; and
  2  9    WHEREAS, the loss of these daring individuals, who
  2 10 despite the dangers of travel by rocket and the
  2 11 difficulties of navigating in earth's outer atmosphere
  2 12 risked their lives in the hope that their efforts
  2 13 would contribute to greater good for humankind, is a
  2 14 tragedy for Iowa, the nation, and the international
  2 15 community; NOW THEREFORE,
  2 16    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES,
  2 17 That the House of Representatives joins with the rest
  2 18 of the nation in grieving for and conveying respect
  2 19 and gratitude for the contributions made by Colonel
  2 20 Rick Husband, Lieutenant Michael Anderson, Commander
  2 21 Laurel Clark, Captain Dave Brown, Commander William
  2 22 McCool, Dr. Kalpana Chawla, and Colonel Ilan Ramon.
