1 1 SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO.
1 2 BY (PROPOSED COMMITTEE ON STATE GOVERNMENT
1 3 BILL BY CHAIRPERSON KING)
1 4 A Concurrent Resolution requesting that the United States
1 5 Congress create a standard nationwide time for poll
1 6 closings in general and congressional elections.
1 7 WHEREAS, fairness and equality among the states would be
1 8 served by providing for a uniform allotment of time in which
1 9 to poll voters; and
1 10 WHEREAS, voter participation would be promoted by the
1 11 casting of all ballots before the local and national media
1 12 announce the projected result of elections; and
1 13 WHEREAS, voters residing in states with multiple time zones
1 14 face the prospect of hearing media projections of presumed
1 15 winners before casting a ballot; and
1 16 WHEREAS, those media projections may ultimately be found to
1 17 be in error; NOW THEREFORE,
1 18 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
1 19 CONCURRING, That the Iowa General Assembly urges the Congress
1 20 of the United States to promote equality in voting among the
1 21 states and protect voters from premature and possibly
1 22 erroneous election result projections; and
1 23 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Iowa General Assembly
1 24 urges the Congress of the United States to enact legislation
1 25 to standardize poll closing times; and
1 26 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be
1 27 forwarded to the President of the United States Senate, the
1 28 Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, and
1 29 members of Iowa's congressional delegation.
