PAG LIN 1 1 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1 2 BY REDFERN and HARPER 1 3 A Resolution designating the Grout Museum of History 1 4 and Science as the official repository of artifacts 1 5 related to the Sullivan Brothers. 1 6 WHEREAS, George Thomas, Francis Henry, Joseph 1 7 Eugene, Madison Abel, and Albert Leo Sullivan, 1 8 formerly of Waterloo, Iowa, joined the United States 1 9 Navy January 3, 1942; and 1 10 WHEREAS, the five brothers were permitted by the 1 11 Navy to serve together on the light cruiser USS 1 12 Juneau; and 1 13 WHEREAS, all five brothers, along with over 700 1 14 other men, were lost at sea during the Battle of 1 15 Guadalcanal, when the USS Juneau was struck by an 1 16 enemy torpedo on November 13, 1942; and 1 17 WHEREAS, the loss of these five brothers was the 1 18 largest loss suffered by one family in a single 1 19 engagement during World War II; and 1 20 WHEREAS, Thomas and Alleta Able Sullivan and their 1 21 daughter Genevieve Sullivan Davidson set aside their 1 22 private grief and devoted over a year of patriotic 1 23 duty to the recruiting efforts of the United States 1 24 Navy; and 1 25 WHEREAS, the United States Navy has named two ships 1 26 in honor of the Sullivan brothers; and 1 27 WHEREAS, the Grout Museum of History and Science is 1 28 in possession of tangible artifacts and archival 1 29 material belonging to and related to the Sullivan 1 30 brothers; and 2 1 WHEREAS, the Fighting Sullivans from Waterloo, 2 2 Iowa, are known throughout the world, and exemplify 2 3 the ideals of self-sacrifice and patriotism; NOW 2 4 THEREFORE, 2 5 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Grout Museum 2 6 of History and Science of Waterloo, Iowa, is 2 7 recognized as the official repository of all tangible 2 8 artifacts and archival material relating to the 2 9 Sullivan brothers. 2 10 LSB 2087SS 79 2 11 vl/cf/24
