  1  1                SENATE RESOLUTION NO. ___
  1  2                 BY  REDWINE and KIBBIE
  1  3 A Resolution designating March 6, 2001, as Lymphedema
  1  4    D-Day.
  1  5    WHEREAS, lymphedema is an accumulation of lymphatic
  1  6 fluid that causes swelling in the arms, legs, or other
  1  7 areas of the body and affects both men and women; and
  1  8    WHEREAS, the swelling caused by lymphedema can lead
  1  9 to severe infection or loss of the use of limbs, and
  1 10 patients suffering from lymphedema must endure
  1 11 physical discomfort and disfigurement and cope with
  1 12 the distress caused by these symptoms; and
  1 13    WHEREAS, the single largest group of people who get
  1 14 lymphedema are cancer patients, including breast,
  1 15 prostate, gynecological, head, neck, and lung cancer
  1 16 and sarcoma and melanoma patients; and
  1 17    WHEREAS, recent studies have indicated that 20
  1 18 percent of breast cancer patients will get lymphedema
  1 19 after surgery and radiation; and
  1 20    WHEREAS, according to the National Cancer
  1 21 Institute, a reported 8.5 million Americans are living
  1 22 after a diagnosis of cancer, of which about 2 million
  1 23 are breast cancer survivors; and
  1 24    WHEREAS, no drug or effective surgical treatment
  1 25 for lymphedema currently exists; and
  1 26    WHEREAS, research in all areas of lymphedema have
  1 27 been notably limited; and
  1 28    WHEREAS, lymphedema, which has no cure and can
  1 29 occur anytime, has a severe financial, physical, and
  1 30 psychological impact on patients; and
  2  1    WHEREAS, each year on March 6th, the National
  2  2 Lymphedema Network sponsors Lymphedema D-Day to honor
  2  3 patients and to raise awareness of the treatment and
  2  4 severity of this condition; NOW THEREFORE,
  2  5    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate
  2  6 designates March 6, 2001, as Lymphedema D-Day.
  2  7    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Senate encourages
  2  8 the citizens of Iowa to honor and support the
  2  9 courageous patients living and coping with this
  2 10 debilitating condition.
