  1  2                       BY TINSMAN
  1  3 A Resolution recognizing the Right Reverend C.
  1  4    Christopher Epting.
  1  5    WHEREAS, the Right Reverend C. Christopher Epting,
  1  6 Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Iowa, was born in
  1  7 Greenville, South Carolina, raised in Orlando,
  1  8 Florida, graduated from the University of Florida in
  1  9 1969, and from Seabury-Western Theological Seminary in
  1 10 1972; and
  1 11    WHEREAS, Bishop Epting served congregations large
  1 12 and small, urban and rural, as a parish priest, served
  1 13 for a time as the Dean of the Institute for Christian
  1 14 Studies, and received a master's degree in Sacred
  1 15 Theology from the General Theological Seminary in New
  1 16 York for his work in spiritual direction; and
  1 17    WHEREAS, Bishop Epting was elected Bishop of Iowa
  1 18 in 1988, and has since worked to empower ministry,
  1 19 strengthen the role and presence of deacons, emphasize
  1 20 adult education and spiritual renewal, and develop
  1 21 cooperative ministry between churches, and has been
  1 22 active in ecumenical relations; and
  1 23    WHEREAS, Bishop Epting serves as chief pastor of
  1 24 the 63 Episcopal congregations in the Diocese of Iowa,
  1 25 and serves as a member of the National Standing
  1 26 Commission on Ecumenical Relations and President of
  1 27 Province IV of the Episcopal Church, and as Bishop
  1 28 Visitor to the Community of the Transfiguration in
  1 29 Cincinnati, Ohio; and
  1 30    WHEREAS, Bishop Epting was instrumental in drafting
  2  1 the document "Called to Common Mission," effecting
  2  2 full communion between the Episcopal Church and the
  2  3 Evangelical Lutheran Church in America; and
  2  4    WHEREAS, Bishop Epting believes that people of all
  2  5 faith traditions need to join together to help all
  2  6 peoples of the world to enrich one another in faith,
  2  7 and to live peacefully linked to one another in
  2  8 community; and
  2  9    WHEREAS, Bishop Epting has recently been called to
  2 10 serve as the Presiding Bishop's Deputy for Ecumenical
  2 11 and Interfaith Relations at the National Episcopal
  2 12 Church, and will begin service at the National
  2 13 Episcopal Church office in New York in mid-April 2001;
  2 14 and
  2 15    WHEREAS, Bishop Epting has been a major influence
  2 16 in Iowa and in the Des Moines community, has offered
  2 17 the opening prayer in the Iowa Senate, and has been a
  2 18 leader of the ecumenical services held at the Capitol;
  2 19 NOW THEREFORE,
  2 20    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate honor
  2 21 the Right Reverend C. Christopher Epting, thank him
  2 22 for his years of service to the people of Iowa, and
  2 23 wish him success in his future endeavors.
  2 24    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Secretary of the
  2 25 Senate shall send a copy of this Resolution to the
  2 26 Right Reverend C. Christopher Epting.
