  1 1 SENATE RESOLUTION NO.
1 2 BY DVORSKY and BOLKCOM
1 3 (COMPANION TO LSB 1968HH BY GRUNDBERG)
1 4 A Resolution recognizing the achievements of Nancy Coover
  1 5 Andreasen.
  1 6 WHEREAS, Nancy Coover Andreasen, M.D., Ph.D., the
1 7 Andrew Woods Chair of Psychiatry, University of Iowa
1 8 College of Medicine, Editor of the American Journal of
1 9 Psychiatry, and author of hundreds of articles and
1 10 books including "The Broken Brain: The Biological
1 11 Revolution in Psychiatry" in 1984, is recognized
1 12 internationally for her distinguished contributions as
1 13 an educator, author, researcher, and provider of
1 14 mental health services in the field of psychiatry; and
1 15 WHEREAS, in her over 30 years of study and research
1 16 in the field of psychiatry, Dr. Andreasen has been a
1 17 leader and a visionary in her profession by, in
1 18 addition to her vast number of other accomplishments,
1 19 developing a tool to evaluate psychiatric
1 20 abnormalities and to rank their severity, which
1 21 evolved into a tool to rate symptoms of schizophrenia
1 22 becoming a "citation classic," cited more than the
1 23 works of Sigmund and Anna Freud combined; utilizing
1 24 neuroimaging to pinpoint and measure the biological
1 25 basis of human behavior in mental illness,
1 26 particularly schizophrenia; and being the first to
  1 27 demonstrate a relationship between manic-depressive
1 28 illness and creativity; and
1 29 WHEREAS, while Dr. Andreasen has been recognized by
1 30 her peers for her contributions to her profession with
2 1 numerous honors and awards, she is also recognized for
2 2 her compassion toward her patients, as an advocate for
2 3 persons with chronic mental illness, and as a person
2 4 who through her unique ability to make brain research
2 5 understandable to the public has provided relief and
2 6 hope to persons with mental illness and their
  2 7 families; and
2 8 WHEREAS, Dr. Andreasen once analogized the need for
2 9 a vision of the future in scientific research to
2 10 hockey, recalling a quote from Wayne Gretzky: "I
  2 11 skate to where the puck will be, not to where it is";
  2 12 and
2 13 WHEREAS, Dr. Andreasen has received numerous
2 14 honors, including most recently the President's
2 15 National Medal of Science on December 1, 2000, which
2 16 has only been awarded to 374 distinguished scientists
2 17 and engineers and to only three Iowans since its
  2 18 inception in 1959; and
2 19 WHEREAS, the inscription on the President's
2 20 National Medal of Science awarded to Dr. Andreasen
2 21 reads, "For her pivotal contributions to the social
2 22 and behavioral sciences, through the integrative study
2 23 of mind, brain, and behavior, by joining behavioral
2 24 science with the technologies of neuroscience and
2 25 neuroimaging in order to understand mental processes
2 26 such as memory and creativity, and mental illnesses
2 27 such as schizophrenia"; and
2 28 WHEREAS, Dr. Andreasen's humility in the midst of
2 29 all the acclaim is best typified by her own words in
2 30 acknowledging her most recent award: "I am a firm
3 1 believer that the importance of one's work is the
3 2 process of doing it, not in getting awards. When I
  3 3 die, I don't care what prizes I won. I care about
3 4 what contributions I can make through my work"; NOW
  3 5 THEREFORE,
3 6 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate
3 7 recognizes Dr. Andreasen not only as an award-winning,
3 8 internationally acknowledged psychiatrist, educator,
3 9 researcher, and author, but as an Iowa treasure who
3 10 through her genuine compassion and dedication has
3 11 improved the lives of and has provided hope and
3 12 understanding to persons with mental illness and their
  3 13 families.
