  1  3 A Senate Resolution honoring Grand Ole Opry singer
  1  4    Wilma Lee Cooper.
  1  5    WHEREAS, Wilma Lee Cooper has been a member of the
  1  6 Grand Ole Opry since 1957 and is widely acclaimed as
  1  7 the First Lady of Bluegrass; and
  1  8    WHEREAS, Wilma Lee Cooper and her late husband,
  1  9 Stoney Cooper, spent part of their early career in
  1 10 Iowa and Nebraska, and have returned to perform in the
  1 11 upper Midwest on many occasions, and continue to have
  1 12 a wide following in the region; and
  1 13    WHEREAS, Wilma Lee Cooper's career has spanned the
  1 14 decades from her childhood in West Virginia in the
  1 15 1930s, when she sang with her parents and sisters as
  1 16 the Leary Family, through the next nearly 40 years of
  1 17 singing with her husband, Stoney Cooper, and the
  1 18 Clinch Mountain Clan, until Stoney's death in 1977,
  1 19 and through more recent appearances on the Grand Ole
  1 20 Opry stage with the reorganized Clinch Mountain Clan;
  1 21 and
  1 22    WHEREAS, the music of Wilma Lee Cooper has always
  1 23 been traditional country music, with some of her best-
  1 24 known songs being "Walking My Lord Up Calvary's Hill,"
  1 25 "The Legend of the Dogwood Tree," "Come Walk With Me,"
  1 26 "Big Midnight Special," "There's A Big Wheel," and "A
  1 27 Daisy A Day"; and
  1 28    WHEREAS, Wilma Lee Cooper has been recognized as
  1 29 having made remarkable contributions to bluegrass
  1 30 music, and has received awards and honors from many
  2  1 sources, including the International Bluegrass Music
  2  2 Association, the Smithsonian Institution, the Country
  2  3 Music Foundation, Harvard University, and the Country
  2  4 Gospel Music Hall of Fame, and has been chosen to
  2  5 record for the Library of Congress; and
  2  6    WHEREAS, Wilma Lee Cooper will be inducted into the
  2  7 Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of
  2  8 America's Preservation Hall of Greats on February 4,
  2  9 2001, and will celebrate her 80th birthday on February
  2 10 7, 2001; NOW THEREFORE,
  2 11    BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the Senate
  2 12 recognizes Wilma Lee Cooper for her achievements as a
  2 13 vocal artist, recognizing not only her talent and
  2 14 career accomplishments but also her contribution to
  2 15 the rich country music heritage celebrated by Iowans
  2 16 and music enthusiasts around the world.
