1 4 A Senate Resolution congratulating Mr. Thomas H.
1 5 Paulsen for being named the Iowa Teacher of the Year
1 6 for 2000.
1 7 WHEREAS, Mr. Thomas H. Paulsen was influenced by
1 8 two forces that shape many an Iowan – a love of
1 9 agriculture gained from his birth and upbringing on an
1 10 Iowa family farm, and a love of education, instilled
1 11 by his mother, who taught in a country school until
1 12 his birth; and
1 13 WHEREAS, he was further guided in the ninth grade
1 14 toward his own teaching career by an inspirational
1 15 agriculture education teacher; and
1 16 WHEREAS, he received his undergraduate degree in
1 17 agriculture education from Northwest Missouri State
1 18 University and his master's degree from the Iowa State
1 19 University; and
1 20 WHEREAS, Mr. Paulsen has served 13 years as an
1 21 agriculture education instructor – first at
1 22 Lynnville-Sully High School and currently at Carroll
1 23 High School, and as a Future Farmers of America (FFA)
1 24 advisor and a football and basketball coach; and
1 25 WHEREAS, during this service, Mr. Paulsen has
1 26 earned numerous awards and recognition, including the
1 27 Iowa Vocational Agriculture Teachers' Association
1 28 Outstanding Young Member, American Vocational
1 29 Association Outstanding Young Member, Carroll County
1 30 Environmental Educator of the Year, and Carroll Rotary
2 1 Club Public School Teacher of the Year for 1999; and
2 2 WHEREAS, Mr. Paulsen developed and shaped the
2 3 agriculture education program that Carroll High School
2 4 and Kuemper Catholic High School cooperatively share
2 5 in Carroll; and
2 6 WHEREAS, Mr. Paulsen is a source of constant
2 7 encouragement and guidance for FFA members, leading
2 8 them to projects that not only provide the students
2 9 with learning opportunities, but which also benefit
2 10 the community; and
2 11 WHEREAS, the National Riparian (Streamside) Buffer
2 12 Initiative is a fine example of such a project, as FFA
2 13 members have worked diligently with public and private
2 14 sector partners to recruit landowners to use native
2 15 grasses as vegetative buffer strips on over 500 acres
2 16 to increase wildlife habitat while reducing soil
2 17 erosion and increasing water quality for neighbors who
2 18 utilize the Middle Raccoon River for their municipal
2 19 water supply; and
2 20 WHEREAS, Mr. Paulsen acts as a mentor to other
2 21 agriculture education teachers and, as a pilot member
2 22 of the statewide Agriculture Educators' Professional
2 23 Development Committee, he has assisted in developing
2 24 an ongoing program for agriculture education
2 25 instructors to further develop their technical
2 26 teaching, classroom management, and personal
2 27 development while receiving continuing education
2 28 credit; and
2 29 WHEREAS, Mr. Paulsen was selected as Teacher of the
2 30 Year for 2000 by a panel of judges composed of
3 1 representatives from the Iowa Department of Education,
3 2 the Iowa State Education Association, the School
3 3 Administrators of Iowa, the Parent Teacher
3 4 Association, the 1999 Iowa Teacher of the Year, the
3 5 Meredith Corporation, and Drake University; and
3 6 WHEREAS, as Iowa's Teacher of the Year for 2000,
3 7 Mr. Paulsen was granted a one-year sabbatical to visit
3 8 schools and speak to community groups as Iowa's
3 9 Ambassador for Education during the 2000-2001 school
3 10 year; NOW THEREFORE,
3 11 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE, That the General
3 12 Assembly honors Mr. Thomas H. Paulsen of Carroll High
3 13 School for his exemplary work in education, applauds
3 14 his efforts and achievements in bringing out the best
3 15 in his students at Carroll High School and Kuemper
3 16 Catholic High School, and congratulates him for his
3 17 outstanding accomplishment in being named the Iowa
3 18 Teacher of the Year for 2000.
3 19 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That an official copy of
3 20 this Resolution be prepared for presentation to Mr.
3 21 Thomas H. Paulsen.
