PAG LIN 1 1 Section 1. The following amendment to the Constitution of 1 2 the State of Iowa is proposed: 1 3 1. Section 1 of Article VI of the Constitution of the 1 4 State of Iowa, as amended by the Amendments of 1868, is 1 5 amended to read as follows: 1 6 COMPOSITION TRAINING. SECTION 1. The militia of this 1 7 State shall be composed of all members of the Iowa national 1 8 guard and all able-bodied male citizens, between the ages of 1 9 eighteen and forty-five years, except such as are or may 1 10 hereafter be exempt by the laws of the United States, or of 1 11 this State, and shall be armed, equipped, and trained, as the 1 12 General Assembly may provide by law. 1 13 2. Section 3 of Article VI of the Constitution of the 1 14 State of Iowa, is repealed. 1 15 Sec. 2. The foregoing proposed amendment to the 1 16 Constitution of the State of Iowa is referred to the General 1 17 Assembly to be chosen at the next general election for members 1 18 of the General Assembly, and the Secretary of State is 1 19 directed to cause the amendment to be published for three 1 20 consecutive months before the date of that election as 1 21 provided by law. 1 22 EXPLANATION 1 23 This proposed constitutional amendment amends the 1 24 constitutional definition of militia to include members of the 1 25 Iowa national guard. This proposed constitutional amendment 1 26 also repeals the constitutional requirement that officers in 1 27 the militia shall be elected by persons liable to perform 1 28 military duty. 1 29 The resolution, if adopted, would be referred to the next 1 30 general assembly before being submitted to the electorate for 1 31 ratification. 1 32 LSB 5267SV 79 1 33 tj/cf/24
